Reset your Pixel or Nexus to factory settings

You can remove data from your Pixel phone or Nexus device by resetting it to factory settings. Resetting this way is also called "formatting" or doing a "hard reset."

Important: A factory reset erases all data from the device.

If you're resetting to fix an issue, we recommend first trying other solutions. Learn how to troubleshoot your issue.

Note: Some of these steps work only on Android 8.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Get ready to factory reset

Step 1: Know the Google Account username & password for the device

To show that it's you doing the reset, you'll need to enter security information. If you can't enter the information, you won't be able to restore your data to the device.

  1. Be sure that you know a Google Account on the device.
    1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
    2. Tap Users & accounts. (If needed, also tap Google.)
    3. See the username.
  2. Be sure that you know the password for the Google Account on the device. If you don't remember the password, get sign-in help.
  3. If you've set a screen lock, be sure that you know your device's PIN, pattern, or password. If you can't unlock your device, learn what you can do.

Tip: If you recently reset your Google Account password, wait 24 hours before performing a factory reset.

Step 2: Back up your data to your Google Account

A factory data reset will erase your data from the device. While data stored in your Google Account can be restored, all apps and their data will be uninstalled.

Step 3: Plug in & connect

A factory reset can take up to an hour.

  1. Plug your device into a power source. Keep it plugged in until the reset completes.
  2. Connect your device to Wi-Fi or your mobile network. When the reset completes, you'll need to be connected to sign in to your Google Account.

Factory reset your device

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap System and then Reset.
  3. Tap Factory data reset and then Reset phone or Reset tablet. If needed, enter your PIN, pattern, or password.
  4. To erase all data from your device's internal storage, tap Erase everything.
  5. When your device has finished erasing, pick the option to restart.
  6. Set up your device and restore your backed-up data. Learn how to restore data on a Pixel phone or Nexus device.

If you can't open your device's Settings app, contact Pixel or Nexus support. Learn how to get help.
