Use restricted profiles on tablets

On an Android tablet, you can choose which apps, features, and content a restricted profile can see and use.
You can use restricted profiles for purposes like these:
  • Family controls. Keep others from seeing certain content types.
  • Point of sale. Let employees use only selected sales and register apps.
  • Kiosk. Set up to demonstrate selected apps and features.
  • Retail. Let customers explore tablet features, but prevent them from browsing or playing games.

Only the tablet owner can create, edit, and delete restricted profiles.

This information is for tablets running Android 4.3 and up. For phones running Android 5.0 and up, learn how to add, switch, or delete users.

Make a restricted profile

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings.
  2. Under “Device,” tap Users and then Add user or profile.
  3. Tap Restricted profile. The new profile opens with a list.
    • To name the profile, tap New profile. Enter the name and tap OK.
    • To pick which listed apps, features, and settings the profile can see and use, tap the On/Off switches and Settings Settings.
  4. Tap Back Back.
  5. Tap the new profile.
    • If you're with the new user, that user can set up the Google Account and other details.
    • If the new user isn't there, that user can set up the next time that you switch to this profile.

Edit a restricted profile

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings.
  2. Under “Device,” tap Users and then Add user or profile.
  3. Tap Restricted profile. The profile opens with a list.
  4. To pick which listed apps, features, and settings the profile can see and use, tap the On/Off switches and Settings Settings.
    • The changes are immediate.
    • If you switch off a listed app, the profile loses all content associated with that app.
    • If you switch a listed app back on after switching it off, the lost app content isn’t restored.

Delete a restricted profile

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings.
  2. Under “Device,” tap Users and then Add user or profile.
  3. Tap Restricted profile.
  4. Next to the profile, tap the Trash Trash.
