Adjust Camera settings

This information applies only to devices running Android 4.4 or higher.

These settings may vary by device.

You can change general Google Camera settings and specific settings for Camera, Video, and Lens Blur modes. To see what settings you can manage, select the options below.

General settings

Resolution & quality

To change the resolution and quality for your device’s camera, follow these steps:

  1. Touch camera Google Camera on a Home screen or in the All Apps menu.
  2. Swipe from left to right, then touch Settings in the lower right corner of the screen.
  3. Under “General Settings,” touch Resolution and quality.
  4. Touch a mode’s options to change resolution and quality.

Viewfinder size

The first time you open Google Camera, you will be prompted to select the size of your viewfinder as 4:3 aspect ratio or 16:9 aspect ratio. If you want to change the size of your Google Camera viewfinder later, follow these steps:

  1. Touch camera Google Camera on a Home screen or in the All Apps menu.
  2. Swipe from left to right, then touch Settings in the lower right corner of the screen.
  3. Under “General Settings,” touch Resolution and quality.
  4. Select the front camera or the back camera.
  5. Change the viewfinder size by selecting the option for 4:3 or 16:9 in the parentheses for your preferred resolution.

Photo location

To store the location information for the photos you take, follow these steps:

  1. Touch camera Google Camera on a Home screen or in the All Apps menu.
  2. Swipe from left to right, then touch Settings in the lower right corner of the screen.
  3. Under “General Settings,” slide the switch next to "Save location" to On if it isn't already turned on.
Camera settings

To change Camera mode settings, follow these steps:

  1. Touch camera Google Camera on a Home screen or in the All Apps menu.
  2. Swipe from left to right, then touch camera mode Camera.
  3. Touch the three horizontal dots in the lower right corner of the screen.

You can change the following settings:

Icon Mode Description
HDR button High Dynamic Range Puts the camera in HDR mode, which captures greater detail in bright or dark areas of a photo. (This setting isn’t available on all devices.)
gridlines button Grid Turn grid lines on or off.
flash auto button Flash mode Turn flash off (X) or on, or set to auto (A).
back camera button Switch camera Switch between the camera on the front to the camera on the back.
countdown timer Timer Turn on 3-second or 10-second timer for front or back camera. The timer is not available when HDR+ is turned on.
Video settings

To change Video mode settings, follow these steps:

  1. Touch camera Google Camera on a Home screen or in the All Apps menu.
  2. Swipe from left to right, then touch video camera Video.
  3. Touch the three horizontal dots in the lower right corner of the screen.

You can change the following settings:

flash auto button Flash mode Turn flash off (X) or on.
back camera button Switch video camera Touch to switch between the camera on the front to the camera on the back.
gridlines button Grid Turn grid lines on or off.
Lens Blur settings

To change Lens Blur mode settings, follow these steps:

  1. Touch camera Google Camera on a Home screen or in the All Apps menu.
  2. Swipe to the right, then touch lens blur Lens Blur.
  3. Touch the three horizontal dots in the lower right corner of the screen.

You can change the following settings:

gridlines button Grid Turn grid lines on or off.
back camera button Switch camera Switch between the camera on the front to the camera on the back.
