Back up or restore data on your Nexus device

You can back up content, data and settings from your Nexus device to your Google account. You can restore your backed-up information to the original device or to another Android device.

Restoring data varies by device and Android version. You can't restore a backup from a higher Android version onto a phone running a lower Android version. If you're restoring data with a different device, see the manufacturer's support site.

  • Photos & videos

Back up data & settings

Note: On a tablet that people share, only the tablet's owner can see the backup and reset options.

What gets backed up
  • Google Contacts data
  • Google Calendar settings
  • Wi-Fi networks & passwords
  • Home screen wallpapers
  • Gmail settings
  • Apps installed through Google Play
  • Display settings (brightness & sleep)
  • Language & input settings
  • Date & Time
  • Settings & data for apps not made by Google (varies by app)

Note: Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data. To find out about an app, learn how to contact its developer.

How to back up

To back up your data

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap System and then Backup.
  3. Turn on Back up to Google Drive.

To add a backup account

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap System and then Backup.
  3. Tap Account and then Add account.
  4. If needed, enter your device's PIN, pattern or password.
  5. Sign in to the account that you want to add.

To switch between backup accounts

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap System and then Backup.
  3. Tap Account.
  4. Tap the account that you want to use for backups.

Erase after backing up

After you back up, if you want to erase everything on your device, you can reset your device7 Learn how to reset your device to factory settings.

Restore backed-up data & settings

  • When you add your Google account to a set-up device, what you'd previously backed up for that Google account gets put onto the device.
  • To restore a backed-up account to a reset device, follow the on-screen steps.
    Important: You can't restore a backup from a higher Android version onto a phone running a lower Android version. Find out how to check and update your Android version.
Restore backed-up app settings

When you reinstall an app, you can restore app settings that you'd previously backed up with your Google account.

To restore app settings:

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap System and then Backup and then App data.
  3. Turn on Automatic restore.

Restore backed-up contacts

If you've saved your contacts to your Google account, they'll sync automatically.

If you have other contacts on a device or SIM card, learn how to manually restore contacts.
