Add apps, shortcuts & widgets to your Home screens

To quickly get to your favorite content, you can customize your Home screens. You can add and organize:

  • Apps
  • Shortcuts to content inside apps
  • Widgets that show information without opening apps

Note: Android isn't the same on all devices. These instructions are for devices running Android 7.1 and up. Check which version of Android you have.

Add apps, shortcuts & widgets to your Home screens

Add an app

To add an app to a Home screen:

  1. Open All Apps. (Learn how to open All Apps.)
  2. Touch and hold the app. You’ll see images of each Home screen.
  3. Slide the app to where you want it. Then, lift your finger.
Add a shortcut

Some apps, like your Settings app, have shortcuts to content inside the app.

To add an app shortcut to a Home screen:

  1. Touch and hold the app, then lift your finger. If the app has shortcuts, you'll see a list.
  2. Touch and hold the shortcut.
  3. Slide the shortcut to where you want it. Lift your finger.

Tip: To use a shortcut without adding it to a Home screen, tap it.

Add a widget

To add a widget, like the Clock widget, to a Home screen:

  1. On a Home screen, touch and hold an empty space.
  2. Tap Widgets.
  3. Touch and hold a widget. You’ll see images of your Home screens.
  4. Slide the widget to where you want it.
  5. Lift your finger.

You can resize some widgets:

  1. Touch and hold the widget, then let go. If the widget can be resized, you'll see an outline with dots on the sides.
  2. To resize the widget, drag the dots.
  3. When you're done, tap anywhere outside the widget.

To move an item on a Home screen:

  1. Touch and hold the app, shortcut, or widget. You’ll see images of your Home screens.
  2. Slide the app, shortcut, or widget to where you want it.
  3. Lift your finger.

Tip: If an app has shortc​uts, slide the app slightly to see the images of your Home screens.

Make a folder for apps

To make a folder on a Home screen:

  1. Touch and hold an app.
  2. Drag the app on top of another app.
    • To add more apps to the folder, drag each app on top of the folder.
    • To rename the folder, tap its name.
Remove an app, shortcut, or widget

To remove an item from a Home screen:

  1. Touch and hold the app, shortcut, or widget.
  2. Drag the item up to Remove .
  3. Lift your finger.

Tip: At the top of your screen, you'll see "Remove" and "Uninstall." "Remove" takes the app off your Home screen only. "Uninstall" takes it off your device.

To get more Home screens:

  1. Touch and hold an app or shortcut.
  2. Slide the app to the right until you see a blank Home screen.
  3. Lift your finger.
Move Home screens

To change the order of your Home screens:

  1. On a Home screen that you want to move, touch & hold an empty space. Lift your finger.
  2. Touch and hold the image of that Home screen.
  3. Slide the image of that Home screen right or left.
Remove Home screens

To remove a Home screen:

  1. Move your apps, shortcuts, and widgets off the Home screen.
  2. After the last app, shortcut, or widget is removed, the Home screen will be removed.
