Google News not crawling images from my WordPress articles 1 Recommended Answer 14 Replies 0 Upvotes

I have applied to be included in Google News. Everything was going great. Google reached out to me to fix an issue with my articles only showing up as summaries. Went ahead and was able to fix that with a drop-down menu in WordPress. After that they reached out to me again, and told me that for some reason my articles are missing images, and that needs to be fixed before my edition can be published. They do not tell me how to do that, so I don't know how to fix it. Everything seems to be set correctly in WordPress, and in Publisher settings too. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for all your help.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply. The images that are not being displayed are the ones hosted on my website. Specifically the featured image of my posts.

Here is one of the feeds:
https://www.angliaikisokos.com/feed/

I got this message from Google Team, but I don't know where I should paste this code snippet on my site in order to make it work:

"We suggest you to embed images using the following markup:"

Google logo

Google

Note: The article headline (or hero) image will be the largest image closest to square dimensions unless one image is designated by annotating it as follows:

Any help is appreciated!

Pa,

Looking at your feed, it looks like your images are hosted on wp.com instead of on your domain.

So, for example, the image url in the feed is:

I think that it why they are saying you would have to embed them that way, which would take a coding change.

However, it looks like your images are also available through your own domain, for example, the image above can also be reached at:

It looks like your Jetpack plugin is what is changing the url.

I don't use Jetpack myself... do you know how to turn that image cacheing feature off? Or at least off in the feeds?

I'm not completely positive that turning it off would fix this issue, but I think that's what's causing it. If it was my site, that's where I would start,

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your help, as per you said, I have turned off the image caching off with Jetpack.
After this, I asked Google News to review the feed once again, and they said it's still not working.
However, if I look at my Google News page, in the articles I can see the images appearing, which is kind of strange, but even now, they say that the images are not there? I have received the following reply from them:

"Thanks for working on the edition.

We re examined the feed and noticed that many articles do not have the images embedded in them. An example article can be found here. We've also attached a screenshot of the feed for your reference.

Please check out the following Help Center article to make sure that your feeds comply with our technical guidelines: https://support.google.com/producer/answer/6170026?hl=en&ref_topic=6179927.

Additionally, I'd also recommend that you check out our Google News Help Forum, where Google News employees and publishers (several who are also Google News product experts!) share helpful tips and expertise. Members of the forum can often troubleshoot your site specifically, and consulting them is often the fastest way to resolve your issue."

They have also attached a screenshot of my feed for reference, which I have attached to this message.

I appreciate your help!

There are ways to make iframes responsive- but I have never tried to do it. This solution seems to be a popular one based on the number of sites suggesting it.

Again though, you'll have to experiment and test it out well if you try it.

I wish I did have a better solution for you,

Chris
