Use text-to-Speech News with Google Assistant

Google Assistant devices can now use text-to-speech technology to respond to user queries and read articles from your publication. When you opt in to text-to-speech, Google Assistant reads the beginning of the article to your readers, up to 650 characters. The user also gets the article sent directly to their phone so they can read the full article if they choose.

Important: The text-to-speech feature is available for articles provided using RSS feeds in these languages:

  • English
  • French
  • Japanese
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish

Opt in to text-to-speech

  1. Sign in to Publisher Center.
  2. Select your publication.
  3. ​​Select Google News and then Edit.
  4. On the navigation menu, go to General.
  5. Go to the “Distribution” section.
  6. Under "Google properties," you can either:
    • From the dropdown, select Allow all properties .
    • Select Allow specific properties.
  7. In the second dropdown, check Text-to-Speech News on Assistant .
  8. Click Save.

Opt out of text-to-speech

  1. Open the Publisher Center.
  2. Select your publication.
  3. Select Google News and then Edit.
  4. On the navigation menu, go to General.
  5. Go to the “Distribution” section.
  6. Under “Google properties,” select Allow specific properties.
  7. In the second dropdown, uncheck Text-to-Speech News on Assistant.
  8. Click Save.
