About publisher-managed ads

Google News supports publisher-managed ads to provide more revenue opportunities for publishers. As a publisher, you can complete ad serving through:

Web

Mobile

Google also supports GAM Small Business.

The standard functionality for ads on a website will continue to work for ads within Google News. You can use the same tools you're already using for campaign and budget management, targeting, and reporting.

If you don’t already have an Ad Manager account, you can create one.

Supported ad formats

Important: The location of your ads within your articles can vary based on factors such as the type of ad and article length.

Google News supports the below ad formats:

  • Shape: Rectangle.

  • Size: 300 × 250 pixels.

  • Format: Static GIF or PNG, animated GIF. You can create ads using HTML.
    Important: HTML5 ads may not work on older devices or earlier versions of software.

  • Recommended file size: 100 KB or smaller. Creatives greater than 100 KB may cause issues for users on slower mobile data networks.

Configure your ads

In the Google Ad Manager:

  1. Sign in to your Google Ad Manager account.

  2. Create or identify existing ad units in Google News. Make sure to consider our supported formats.

In the Google News Publisher Center:

  1. Sign in to Publisher Center.

  2. Select your publication.

  3. In the navigation menu, click Ads.

  4. Find “Google-managed ads.”

  5. Under “Percentage of ads managed by Google,” change the percentage to a number up to 100.

    Important: You cannot change your percentage to go below the Google-managed ads percentage stated in your agreement.

  6. Check Fill remaining inventory with ads managed by your publication.

  7. Under “Your ads tools,” choose one of the options for ad-serving:

  • Google Ad Manager

  • AdSense + AdMob

  • Custom

  1. Under “Select your Google Ad Manager account,” select the account you’d like to use.

    Tip: If you don’t already have an Ad Manager account, you can create one.

  2. Enter your ad unit names:

    Tip: Ad units must start with an alphanumeric character.

If you use Google Ad Manager

  1. Enter the names of the ad units you set up in Ad Manager for web ads and mobile.
  2. ​If you configured the same ad unit in Ad Manager to serve both web and mobile ads, you can specify the same unit for both web and mobile.

If you use AdSense + AdMob

  • Specify 2 ad units:
  1. One from Ad Manager serving web ads from AdSense
  2. One from AdMob to serve mobile ads
  • The AdMob ad unit can be found in AdMob in this format: “ca-app-pub-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/yyyyyyyyyy.”

10. To target single sections in your publication with specific mobile ad units, in the Google Ad Manager, turn on
Configure mobile ad units by section.​

Important: You can add separate ad unit names per section. If an ad unit isn’t specified for a section, we’ll use the edition
level ad unit specified above.

We recommend you use separate ad units for News. If you use existing ad units that are shared across your other properties, News reporting may be less reliable. It takes a few hours for new ad units to start serving.

Set up Google Ad Manager for News

To fill your news inventory through authorized buyers, follow the below steps:

Step 1: Property setup

  1. In Ad Manager, set up a new piece of inventory as a site or ad unit.

  • For Android: You need a property of type Mobile in-app.

  • For iOS + Web: You need a property of type Web.

Step 2: Trafficking

  1. In Ad Manager, create a Google Ad Manager line item., selecting the appropriate property.

  2. Make sure the Google Ad Manager line item targets the Google Ad Manager ad unit for News that you set up in Publisher Center.

If you run into any issues, contact your Google Ad Manager representative or consult the Ad Manager.

Important: If you’re using Network Partner Management in Ad Manager, you may not be able to serve ads on News until you add News as a network partner.

Policies

The policies below apply to publishers who want to sell ads on their publication page in Google News.

Google News ads must adhere to the policies outlined in its advertising policies. News ads must also follow these guidelines:

To make sure you target appropriate ads to users, use Google Ad Manager's device targeting capabilities.

Per the terms of service, advertisements must be served through an integrated ad server. For example, advertisements cannot be served as images embedded in your article content. This ensures that your articles and ads are properly formatted for users across devices.

What happens if I violate this policy?

If you fail to adhere to the ads policy guidelines, your publication may lose exposure or be removed from the Google News catalog.

If you violate a policy, you will receive a notification in one of the following ways:

  • Warning: If an ad violates policies for the first time, you'll typically receive a warning by email first. If you receive a warning, please fix the policy violation immediately.

  • Suspension: The removal or suspension of your publication’s publisher-managed ads in the News catalog can happen for these reasons:

    • Failure to fix a policy violation after receiving a warning

    • If you commit a second policy violation after your edition received a warning

    • In some cases, if you commit a serious first policy violation
