Create and manage sections

This Help Center article shows you how to create and manage sections of your edition in Google News Producer.

Article sections make it easier for readers to find what they want in your edition. After you create a section, use your Producer account to keep your content up-to-date.

How to create a section

A section organizes content under the same topic (e.g. Latest, Sports, Politics, Arts & Culture, Fashion). To create a section, follow the steps below:

  1. Open Producer.
  2. Click Sections in the navigation menu.
  3. Click Add another section.
  4. Identify the section type as one of the following:

Note: To surface a particular type of content and display it in a particular way, use the appropriate section type. Remember to enter the name of the section and other settings, based on the section type.

If you choose feed for your section type, do the following:

Create a feed

We recommend that you send content to Google News via a feed. A feed is a file that contains all the content you want to make available to users. For best results, optimize the look and feel of your content through markup and media assets. Google News delivers up to 25 of the most recent articles within a feed. You cannot override this value.
To get started, do the following:
Note: This is a summary of required steps to create a feed. For complete details, review News feed specifications.
  1. Create a standard RSS feed or Atom feed.
  2. Add article contents and markup:
    • Full articles (i.e. do not submit summaries, highlights, or blurbs)
    • Video, audio, images, or Google Docs
  3. Validate your feed via http://feedvalidator.org/ or http://validator.w3.org/feed/.

Choose a feed content source

If you choose to send your content via a feed, use one of the following options:
  • Choose an RSS or Atom feed: Update your feed URL in this field
  • Feed options: To learn about available feed options and which one is best for you, refer to the table below:
Option Description Use case
Directly from feed News regularly crawls your feed URL and imports new articles and media objects as you post them in your feed. You have a working feed. We recommend this option for all publishers.
Crawling source URL News regularly crawls your feed for updates. When we find a new article, we follow the URL in the <link> tag to construct the article from the content hosted on that URL.

You can’t send properly formatted articles from your feed. This option is not recommended.

Directly from feed and crawl for additional media

News constructs articles from the feed, and supplements them with media found at the source URL.

If you choose this method and we can’t crawl your site, you may end up with multiple images or no images at all.

You can’t submit media objects in your feed, but they display on the page in the <link> tag in your feed.

Additional image options

Directly address duplicate image issues by submitting only one high-resolution (at least 800 px) version of an image to News. Use the following image options to give News more instructions to help keep duplicate images from appearing in your articles:

  • Remove duplicate images by URL: Producer removes media that may be duplicates based on image URLs.
  • Enable loose duplicate image matching: Producer automatically detects duplicate images when the image data is similar. This setting directs Producer to flag more images as duplicates.

  5. Type “yes” in the text field to confirm that you want to permanently delete the section.

Deleting a section is permanent. If you mistakenly delete a section, create a new one to include the content in News again.
