Use map layers

You can organize your map features with map layers. For example, you can put color-coded restaurants on one layer and coffee shops on another.

Change the number of layers

Maps are created with one layer, but you can have up to 10.

  1. On your computer, sign in to My Maps.
  2. Open or create a map. You’ll see your layers in the box on the left.
  3. Make the changes you want.
    • Add a layer: Click Add layer. Then click the title and add a name.
    • Delete a layer: Next to the layer title, click More More and then Delete this layer.
    • Hide or show everything on a layer: Uncheck or check the layer.

Change what’s in a layer

You can move map features among layers, pick their colors and icons, or change their info.

  1. On your computer, sign in to My Maps.
  2. Open or create a map.
  3. You’ll see your layers in the box on the left. Checked layers are visible.
  4. Make the changes you want.
Move map features among layers

You can drag lines, shapes or places to a new spot in a layer’s list of features or between layers.

If you can’t move a map feature:

  • Make sure it’s not grouped with other map features.
  • Make sure you’re not moving it onto a directions layer.
  • Make sure there’s no info in fields the destination layer doesn’t have.
Edit a layer’s info in a table

To view a layer’s contents in a table, click More More and then Open data table.

  • Edit line, shape or place info: Edit cells.
  • Add or delete info fields: Add or delete columns.
  • Change column formats: Duplicate the column and delete the original.
Pick colors and icons for a layer
  1. Go to a layer that has map features, like places or lines, and click Style Style.
  2. Under "Group places by", pick a style.
  3. Pick a style from the list and follow instructions:
    • Uniform style: One color and icon for the entire layer.
    • Sequence of numbers: Mark places on the map with a number.
    • Individual styles: Each map feature has its own color and icon.
    • Style by data column: Group items by data values. Each group has its own colors and icons. You can sort by ranges or categories.
  4. To pick colors and icons, point at each map feature or group of features and click Color Color.

Tip: To group map features into ranges, pick a column in Number format.
