Explicit content in movies and TV shows on Google TV
What is accepted will always be at the discretion of Google.
Policies may also differ from country to country due to differing local standards for sensitive content.
Overview
The purpose of the examples below is to provide guidelines for when content may not be permitted for sale or promotion on Google TV.
Due to the open nature of our storefronts, we evaluate the overall tone of the movie, considering psychological impact, depravity and/or adult storylines (incest, rape, bestiality, underage sex, etc) as well as whether it contains high levels of nudity, sex and/or violence. A movie that is not permitted for sale, or withheld from promotion on the Play store will rarely be based on the presence of explicit nudity, sexual or violent content alone but on the movie as a whole.
Sex & nudity
Content that contains graphic sex scenes that comprise more than about 5% of total content runtime and/or contains long or frequent scenes that contain multiple partners, masturbation or sexual violence may not be promoted and may not be permitted for sale on the store.
Violence
Content that contains frequent or pervasive bloody and/or gory graphic violence may not be permitted for sale or promotion on the Play store.
Titles and posters
Titles that contain profanity or strong sexual language that is inappropriate for minors will likely not be promoted on the store. Posters whose artwork depicts graphic violence / gore, nudity, or sexually suggestive / explicit content are not permitted.
Trailers
Trailers should be acceptable to all audiences. Mild cursing, mild sexually suggestive dialogue or mild violence is permitted, however, even brief instances of sexually explicit content, nudity, strong language, graphic violence, or drug usage may prevent the trailer from being published. We will request delivery of a new trailer in these instances, though if one is not available, the title may still go live without a trailer.
Metadata
Content metadata descriptions should be acceptable to all audiences. Sexual, profane or other objectionable language/themes may cause content to be withheld from the Play store or promotion on the Play store. In some extreme cases, rated content can also be withheld from promotion in certain regions due to higher sensitivities to explicit content.
Ratings
Content rated NC-17 by the MPAA in the US (or content with an NC-17-equivalent rating in other territories) is not allowed to be published on Google storefronts.
Additional Content Policies for India
Partners must not upload content that:
(i) belongs to another person and to which the user does not have any right;
(ii) is defamatory, obscene, pornographic, paedophilic, invasive of another‘s privacy, including bodily privacy, insulting or harassing on the basis of gender, libellous, racially or ethnically objectionable, relating or encouraging money laundering or gambling, or otherwise inconsistent with or contrary to the laws in force;
(iii) is harmful to children;
(iv) infringes any patent, trademark, copyright or other proprietary rights;
(v) violates any law for the time being in force;
(vi) deceives or misleads the addressee about the origin of the message or knowingly and intentionally communicates any information which is patently false or misleading in nature but may reasonably be perceived as a fact;
(vii) impersonates another person;
(viii) threatens the unity, integrity, defence, security or sovereignty of India, friendly relations with foreign States, or public order, or causes incitement to the commission of any cognisable offence or prevents investigation of any offence or is insulting other nation;
(ix) contains software virus or any other computer code, file or program designed to interrupt, destroy or limit the functionality of any computer resource; or
(x) is patently false and untrue, and is written or published in any form, with the intent to mislead or harass a person, entity or agency for financial gain or to cause any injury to any person.
