I have spent an hour on the phone with google support today and have tried every setting related thing they could suggest, plus spent over an hour with my carrier (dodo) to try to resolve the issue to no avail. 
I am able to send a group message and I think(I'm not certain in all cases) it does reach the recipients (although it is definitely delayed sometimes), although it comes through as an individual SMS rather than a group message, and then likewise any replies are individual. There are other group messaged that people have tried to send to me that I know have not come through. 
I was not convinced that it was not a carrier issue so I replaced the SIM in my phone with my husbands sim from a different carrier (Optus) and I encountered the same issue.
As you can understand, I am beginning to get quite frustrated with this situation because I have wasted a lot of time already trying to fix it and am not certain if I am receiving messages correctly. Any help that you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Amelia, welcome to the Android Messages User Forum!
I'm sure support had you try this, but usually this is related to a setting.  Please verify for me that when you go into Andorid Messages / Settings / Advanced / Group Messaging - you have it set to "Send an MMS reply to all recipients (group MMS)".  If not, that is likely the culprit. :)

Sorry, but I would like clarification.  When I go into Messages / settings / Advanced/ Group Messaging I get the following options: 1.  "Send an SMS reply to all recipients and get individual replies (Mass Text)" and 2. "Send an MMS reply to all recipients (group MMS)"   The way I read Arkieguy's Reply is to make sure that #2 is selected.  Am I correct?

You're assumption is right that this setting is selected (and has been deselected and phone restarted etc. multiple times). Any other suggestions?
I've also:
-cleared caches on messaging app
-updated messing app
-updated/tried alternative APNs
-turned mobile data off and on
-played with WiFi connection
-turned on off auto download MMS setting
-spoken with tech support from dodo for an hour where they assessed everything from their end. 

There may be other things that I've tried too that I'm forgetting....
I'm stumped!!
