Messages app keeps changing my notification sound. 1 Recommended Answer 52 Replies 148 Upvotes

I have a custom notification sound that I like to use when I get text messages. Typically, it works for a while. But, seemingly randomly, the Messages app changes the notification sound back to my phone's default tone, and when I go to my notification settings, every single conversation has it's own notification properties, and each conversation is set to my phone's default ringtone.

People have suggested to delete the app's data and cache. I've done that, and it works for a while. But the same thing happens over again. I have to go into each conversation and change the default sound to the one I want to use.

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S9+ with Android 9.0.

I also have this problem.  I have my default notification sound set to silent so VERY inconvenient.  I clear my storage and cache and temporarily fixes the problem.  That step also makes me reset to dark mode and reset my incoming message sound :(
The individual conversation notifications possibly start after someone group texts, maybe an iphone text, really cannot pinpoint the trigger.  Unfortunately noting missed texts is how I know!!!
In settings - apps & notifications - messages - Notifications - tap and a list of conversations then appears and notifications for those conversations (individual and group) all have individual notifications and all different. Clear data and cache they all disappear!
Let me state I clear data storage and cache, reset, works for awhile, DO NOT ADJUST ANYTHING, and this randomly happens.
I hope someone here has a solution or gets the message of this bug to Google.  I have written on the play store reviews.  Really do not want to revert back to Verizon messages +, but missing texts is no joke

I have a 1st generation Pixel with the latest Android that came straight from the Google store, No carrier bloat

This has been going on for me for a while. They just refuse to dedicate any time to fixing their app "messages". It's a joke.

Same. Custom notifications revert to defaults no matter what I do. And this applies to entire Google line:  Messages, Gmail, Calendar, etc. I've spent hours trying to fix this (following everyone's advice) to no avail. It might work for a day but then it reverts -- like "Groundhog Day," actually. It's really annoying, and I've given up. Using Pixel XL and Android 10. I noticed it after upgrading to Android 10 but it could have been happening before.
