Ah okay. Thank you. Do you know the names of any third party apps that would accomplish this?

I will check for you. I switch phones all the time so I stick with Messages to avoid losing stuff.

One of our guys suggested SMS Backup but you would of course need the old phone. Hope you still have that.

All of my messages are still on my phone. I did not switch from an old phone. I can see all of my old messages in my other messaging apps, just not in Google messages.

Why did it transfer some of them and not all of them?  It also transferred some old ones and some new ones and did not transfer some old ones and some new ones (for different people as well).  I could understand transferring none of them because they are not on the Google server, but it seems it was transferring from the old SMS app, not from the cloud.  I went from the Samsung app on Android Pie to the Google app on my Note 8.

I have the same issue.  I switched to the new app (on the same phone) but can only see old texts sent to me, not ones I sent so all of the conversations are one sided...there is no way that's how it's supposed to be.

Same here, just had to switch phones because the charging port became unusable. I had Google messages on the old phone and now on the new phone but have no messages from March 1 to last week that transferred. All my older ones did.

I don't think this answers the query.  He is not changing phone , just changing the default SMS app to Google Messages. It cannot be true that because you want to change from the manufacturers SMS app to Googles that it cant transfer historic messages.

My phone has thousands of text messages and the application has become sluggish when using it. If I archive messages, will that free up actively used space and speed up the application?

Also, when archiving messages, do they also backup into the google cloud in case they need retrieved at a later time and on a different (new) phone?

If the messages application backs up all messages then I assume I no longer need to have "SMS backup" as an application that backs up all my messages.

Appreciate your time and knowledge!

Same problem here on Redmi Note 7. Used an app to transfer messages from my old phone, yet there is no hint of them in Google's app as opposed to the native app which shows them.

I'm in disagreement with the recommended answer, as that isn't how the product is designed to function. If we're talking about messages that are still on the device, and we're not talking about restoring messages on to a new device, then the issue is likely a simple storage/caching issue with Google Messages.

If you're switching to a different texting app on Android, any messages that are still on your device should/will be picked up by the new texting app.

For example, if you're moving from a third-party texting app and then move to Google Messages, Google messages should have no issue automatically showing all messages that are still on the device.

However, a common issue with Google Messages, especially if you have ever previously launched the app before, is that it won't show all of your messages due to a storage/cache issue. The quick fix is to reset the storage and cache of Google Messages:

Settings -> Applications -> Google Messages -> Clear Storage, Clear Cache

The accepted answer doesn't address the question but SH007's does; clearing the the Google Messaging app's cache and data worked for me.

It also worked when I changed phones.  I backed up the old phone with the SMS Backup & Restore app and then restored it on the new phone using the same app.  Samsung's messaging app immediately discovered the old phone's restored texts;  the Goggle Messaging app also discovered them -- after I cleared its cache and data.  Thanks SH007!
