I cannot set a notification sound for just google messages.

Going into the settings the incoming messages is missing and there is no option to change it. Only way to do it is from settings in phone but it chnages all notifications. I'm also using andriod 14

Yes, this is what I was looking for.  Ok, what you want is the option called - "Manage Notification categories for each app" which you can find in the phone settings, Notifications, Advanced Settings, and then to the bottom.  Turn that on, and when you go back to the notifications settings for the messages app, you can then scroll down to "Notification categories" and then down to "incoming messages" under "Default Settings" and tap that, and that will take you to another screen where you can set the sound for just those.

Hi and welcome to the Google Messages Community. 👋

I just need to take a few details from you which will help me to help you. What's the make and model of your handset? Did you download the Google Messages application from the Play Store or was it pre installed on your handset?

Thanks for your question.

I love this app. I had so much trouble with the alert issue, I almost settled for another app. Thank goodness I found the fix.

Thank you for this. I have been trying to fix this for months. It should be a one click setting within the app!

What if you don't have the "Manage Notification categories for each app" option under Notifications, Advanced Settings? What do I do to fix this?

How come I have no sound on Google messaging when I receive a message I tried everything there's nothing there to make a sound or picker sound
Nov 9, 2024
I TOOO, have no way to have sound to any messages I recieve after repeatedly trying every combination google suggests. This new RCS is bogusly flawed and frustratedly Forced on its customers.. I Hate it

Could it be your notification volume level is turned down? Open your full volume control panel to check.

Those instructions are Not working to allow Sound notifications when recieving google messages. This new format sucks in many ways

I also found this to be the case, so I used Zedge -my only option, not my list of notification sounds- and downloaded a bunch of sounds, and then reset my default. HOWEVER, I still can't attach sounds to the majority of my messaging contacts. I don't even have the option. Also, I still can't get it to read my messages out loud.

Ooookkk. Samsung phone, in the messaging app touch the picture icon and choose (i), touch notifications, touch sound. On my phone it only shows Zedge, so you are limited to Zedge tones. Search for whatever you need, notification, find the tone you want, touch the download icon, choose set notification or media folder. I don't know where it goes to a media folder at this point, but it will show up in the Zedge list of tones you have chosen.

I have an S21, but you should use a file explorer and paste your preferred sound (mp3 or ogg) file into the "Notifications" folder. All of mine show up when I go into Messages settings to select the default sound. And, yes, the original suggestion worked for me. I assume Google Messages had an update sometime and I didn't realize they slammed me into that setting being turned off. So STUPID! It was driving me nuts because until you change that setting, all you get is the option to change the setting in the app, but it isn't there when you look for it. This setting is the very last one in the "Advanced settings" section (see screenshot).

1. Enable "Manage notification categories for each app"
  • Open Settings: Go to the main Settings app on your Samsung phone.
  • Navigate to Notifications: Scroll down and tap on "Notifications."
  • Access Advanced Settings: Look for "Advanced Settings" (usually at the bottom) and tap on it.
  • Enable the option: Toggle on "Manage notification categories for each app."
2. Customize Google Messages Notifications
  • Open Google Messages: Launch the Google Messages app.
  • Access Settings: Tap on your profile picture or the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner. Then, select "Message settings" (or "Settings" in older versions).
  • Go to Notifications: Tap on "Notifications."
  • Select "Incoming messages" under "Default settings."
  • Choose "Sound" and select your preferred notification sound from the list.

Notification Categories is what everyone is needing to click on then click Incoming Messages

That did it for me! Thanks!!!

I have a Pixel 9 pro. There is no "Advanced Settings" for Messages. Here is how I did it (January 2025): Settings-Apps-Messages-All Messages Notifications (toggle on to reveal more options)-Incoming Messages (toggle on to see more options)-Sound

Also have this issue. I can no longer change individual sounds on my apps on S24+, Jan 2025. This must have been removed - can someone please reinstate this option as it is really obnoxious to have the same sounds for a camera alarms as text messages.

My messaging is all over the place I need some serious help l

I might be able to help. What is your issue specifically?  What does all over the place mean.

I've solved this problem completely for Android 13 14 15. I came to this thread, looking for answers and followed the incorrect advice by something in this thread. And then discovered the actual steps on accident and nearly jumped off the couch, celebrating yelling finally. Why does Google make it almost impossible to find these settings and difficult? It's a common setting that everyone does uses often. It is so buried. Here are the steps.
In settings, go to apps, then scroll to messages. Select messages, then select notification then scroll down to notification categories and select that the very first choice should say incoming message default settings underneath a phone number, not your cell number but something with your service. I'm sure I edited mine out. In the screenshots that I'm hmm, posting. Choose the incoming message to fault settings. Underneath
Click on that, scroll down to sound, click that change sound for notifications. Hooray, all the options for sounds are there just like for ringtone. I have to make two reply posts to upload the screenshots. This won't let me upload all of them in one reply. There is 5.

Here are the last two steps.

Hello all, I have read through this entire thread, lots of great ideas, but still need help with this. I have a Samsung S24, running Android 14. None of the tips have worked here, because I don't have any of these options. I literally need the messages app to have a separate notification tone, for work. I tried Zedge, but it's too time consuming for me, don't really like it, as I work 2 jobs. Are there any apps out there that only do notification tones? Or any other workarounds? I've already searched. I wish I could fix this problem. Note: I use hearing aids. Thank you 🙏.
