I keep changing the name of the group in Messages to my desired name and it keeps reverting back to the names of the people in the group chat. This did not happen previously. I did enroll in the Google beta program for Android 14 for a bit but I then opted out and my phone did a factory reset and is now back to Android 13. Why does this keep happening? I am using a Pixel 7 Pro.

I have the same issue. Only one group does it consistently now. Kind of annoying. I'm on Android 13 Pixel 7pro

I found a way around this!!!! What you need to do is act like you are going to create a new group. Add all the people from the existing group chat (no need to delete it). Once you add everyone, it will ask you to create a name and BAM! It will update and you can keep your chat. It's been 3 days and I still have them there. BTW I have group chats with more than 12 people and at least half of them are iPhone users. You're welcome!!!!!

P.S.

I found it easier to take a screen shot of the list of names and then refer back it to make sure I didn't leave anyone out. As long as you add all the same numbers this will work and you get to keep your original group chat with all the previous messages.

its extremely irritating. i have different group texts, for real different workgroups. some have similar people in them. its tough to see which group im responding to. just started to glitch out within the week. cleared cache, no help. deleted app, reinstalled no help.

Sadly, google seems to have gone the way of apple in requiring conformity. This, from their guidelines on group names:

"Add to, leave, or name a group conversation

If your group members all have RCS chats turned on, you can change options for group conversations: ... "

Where did this RCS requirement come from? When? My understanding is that RCS is google, meaning those with iphones can't have RCS turned on. Am I right? And if RCS IS required, how the heck can you figure out who in your group does or does not have it?

I have groups with family members with iPhones, I have android, and group names have stuck while other group names keep disappearing. Family are all on same mobile plan - maybe a factor?

RCS is an open standard, not proprietary to Google. Apple could literally choose to support it whenever it wants.

Another log for the fire. I get a warning that my group has too many people and it tells me that 10 (ten) is the limit.

This is regressive and is removing features I've used for well over a year.

I'm using a Pixel 7A and ever since I had to do a factory reset on my phone last week it started doing this. The group names are retained until I close Messages, then they revert back. I am also using Android 13. This is so frustrating!

Same issue here. Received a warranty replacement phone (Samsung Fold 3) and in the course of switching over to the new phone, the Messages app must have updated - now, group names won't stick for more than a few hours. It's infuriating.
