How can I set my settings so I can see if my message was read and see they're typing back

I've gone to settings to see how I can do this with no luck.My messages show occasionally when they are ready and occasionally when they are typing the reply back.I would like to see this always.Please tell me how to do this.Thankyou in advance.----Jerry

Read receipts are under Chat features. Those only work if an RCS Chat is used (both phones have to be connected to RCS). Otherwise, an SMS/MMS is sent (those don't have read receipts).
