How do I change my texts to display time elapsed instead of timestamp of text received?

It started either today or yesterday but the most recent inbound/outbound text in each chat now shows what time the text was sent/received instead of displaying time elapsed. I don't' see anything in settings for it, I've tried turning the phone on and off, unpairing and pairing back up with the desktop app. The desktop app still shows how it used to be and I'll include screenshots for reference. One is with the timestamp while using on my phone and the other is with what it's still like on the desktop app with elapsed time.

Do you know how to hide the time stamp from it entirely? I rather it show no time than this. Hopefully they make it a feature to be able to choose.

Changing features like this with no way to change them back is a small example of how Google has failed at its original core mission statement of "don't be evil." The "n minutes ago" is much better than a timestamp which requires knowledge of the current time and some brain math to figure out if you let the conversation lapse awkwardly long.
