My phone is all of a sudden incompatible with Google Messages on Play Store? 1 Recommended Answer 52 Replies 32 Upvotes

Nokia 1. Android Pie. September 5th security update.
Reverted from latest beta to normal. Play Store uninstalled ALL updates to app. When I go in messages app, I get constant pop ups to update app. When I go in Play Store, it says my phone is no longer compatible? Tried going back to beta when I was in Play Store hoping it would work. Check screenshots for yourself.

Went on chrome and out of 4 devices linked to my account only 1 is incompatible - Nokia 1. Surely there is no reason to make a default system app all of a sudden incompatible without no reason? Never seen anything like this before.

Something must have changed with that specific device

The app is still on my phone just the basic one version 4. something. Considering its got Android Pie latest security update and worked fine until some texts weren't sent to me, there seems no logical reason to make it incompatible. I know Android Go Edition have lots of issues regarding app comparability but that's normally like banking apps etc. Plus I have other devices on my account that are Android Go phones that are compatible. Where can I go for help? Google never bother replying to emails on their so-called app-support email address. What can I do for answers? I am not sideloading the APK as there are several different versions of the app. Mine is Go edition.

Are you currently still on beta or did you leave the beta? If you are still on beta, try opting out.

Tried it. Opting out has completely took Google Messages from the play store. It won't find it at all. That's why I opted back in because in beta tab it says there's an update and at least I can see it! It's now gone completely.

Thanks Scott I appreciate it. The thing that baffles me the most is if the phone really is incompatible with app, why do I get popups on app to update and why if I opt in beta on the beta tab clearly says there's an update but when I go on the app page, it says incompatible? If an app is incompatible, either Google completely disables it like webview app or it won't appear play store. I've asked over on the Nokia forum but most users on there are in bed as it's 3.49am here in Europe!

Thanks Scott. I went to Nokia direct via the HMD Nokia app. The Live Chat team member was extremely rude to me insisting it was all Google's fault and it is nothing to do with them whatsoever. When I informed this idiot I was on Google support talking to a trusted community member who has to spend years earning Google's trust to be given that tag, I was told in no certain terms I should not go on internet listening to rumours and hearsay. I swear this was from official Nokia staff. I then asked if I do not go to my clearly incompetent phone manufacturer who should bare minimum show some kind of concern that a customer cannot access a critical system app, who am I supposed to tell? I was then threatened with being blocked from Nokia support for an unmentioned period of time and when I asked if if I could have an email address of his superiors, he disappeared completely from the chat never to return.

That is a horrible support experience.  I would try and find a way to send some sort of feedback about it.  Anyway,  is Messages the texting app that came as default on your phone?

Hi Jason,

Believe me I have tried getting in touch with the support email address for the Nokia app explaining what had happened but no support. From my experience, it's very rare for companies to reply to emails that are given on google play store as support. The app-help Google one is a classic case as Google will never respond back to you.

Anyway yes Google Messages is my default sms app. I don't think I mentioned this but I have done the basics, delete data and cache from play store and Google framework app, reboot etc. I have even sideloaded an an APK from APKMirror. I can install it fine but play store still believes the app is incompatible.

Do you by chance have more than one account setup on your device?

Hi Jason, many thanks for your prompt reply. You and Scott put paid employees on certain companies I do not want to discuss again to shame with your suppirt.

Do I have more than 1 Google account on my phone right now? No I do not. Just the one. Have I used different mobile numbers on this phone? Yes I have but not since I factory reset my phone back in early September, prior to this problem.

I literally opted out of beta fully expecting to revert to latest stable version and have somehow woken up in a nightmare alternate universe where logic doesn't exist.

Finally figured out what is wrong. I've uninstalled updates again to revert back to factory version of app. I've had a look in the manifest and it says the version of Google Messages I have was designed for Android Q. As I do not have that on my phone (I have Android Pie), the Play Store will never find me a compatible app as my OS does not coincide with what the app thinks I have. Which begs the question - how am I supposed to revert the app to what it should be?

Thanks I will download it now! This problem is actually worse than I thought.

I have gone in system/app folder and checked all Google apps. All of them are now designed for Android Q. I strongly believe if I uninstalled any updates on any Google app, they will now become incompatible on play store.

I had a OTA update very recently for September 5th security update for my phone. Call me suspicious but I believe this update has now changed all Google apps to be for Android Q but my phone stays as Android Pie.

Who can I report this to? Is it Google's responsibility or Nokia's? I am seriously struggling to get anywhere with Nokia so would really appreciate any advice you have. If this security update has affected all Nokia 1 phones then everyone is at risk of having apps becoming incompatible just by uninstalling the updates?

It wouldn't hurt to look through any Nokia based forums. There might be others facing a similar issue and you may find something helpful.

I have done just that Jason. https://community.phones.nokia.com/discussion/52430/possible-problem-with-nokia-1-september-update#latest

Hopefully someone will confirm my suspicions. I don't know what I want the most - to be wrong and not know how to solve this issue or be correct and wait for Nokia to send over another OTA update for everyone affected.

I will also suggest sending feedback from within Messages app and Play Store.  You won't get a response for the feedback. but hopefully it will make them aware there is an issue.

I have updates. Looks like an issue with Google on server side as multiple Nokia phones are having the exact same problems. So far Nokia 1, Nokia 7.1 and Nokia 8.1 are affected.

I hope this is resolved quickly because I am concerned that having a very old version of messages leaves me susceptible to RCS issues. I havent received a single text message since this started and I've checked smsc number, I clear cache, I restart network signal. Nothing works.

Yep, I agree. I went back on live chat again and informed them of this and insisted they contact Google or find out what the hell is going on as it seems practically every Nokia phone is affected. I was told that it is a developer issue and I should pass this on. No concern was shown, no investigation being made by them. It really frustrates me to see companies pass the buck expecting someone else to deal with problems and not take responsibility or want to act on behalf of their customers.

Sh*t like this seriously makes my blood boil. The Nokia support with their vague responses to the evenwell apps that noone know what they do exactly, the fact that those apps are STILL on the phone after the Pie upgrade although they were promised to be removed (not only "disabled" whatever that means), incredible Pie bugs like the lockscreen not accepting your unlock pattern, which forces you to actually having to reboot your effing phone to get access and now this Messages incompatibility disaster.
Sorry for ranting and not actually contributing to the issue.

edit: I, too, am a Nokia 1 owner with the exact same issue btw :)

regarding

I cannot confirm your findings. I pulled some Google apps  apks from my Nokia 1 (sept. update, Pie), decrypted and decompiled them with apk-tool to check the manifest. I checked Messages, Calendar, Gmail Go and Photos. Out of those, only Messages had platformBuildVersionName set to Q in the manifest. All others were on P, 9 or even 10 (Google Photos).

This CAN'T be a Nokia issue. The apps are Google owned and are maintained and updated by Google. If compatibility is broken, I'd blame Google for that instead of Nokia. It's not something that Nokia did. It is same as how Amazon app was not compatible with Nokia 3.2 and 4.2. Contacting Amazon is what solved it. Talking of contacting Google, the fact that there's no way to really connect with staff on Google's payroll is another mess. I prefer Microsoft for this reason.
The issue seems to affect Nokia devices which are shipped with Google's flavor of Android. The app works on my Nokia 7 which runs on the non-Android One Chinese ROM. But is broken on my Nokia 2.2, 8.1 and 7.2. This can't be an error with Nokia. Instead some error by Google which broke compatibility with Nokia's Android One/Go phones. And these phones run Android the closest to the way  that Google expects.

The problem seems to exist on other phones as well. These are pictures of a Galaxy S10 and a Galaxy A80. They use a different standard texting app so users are not likely to notice this problem.

I'm having a compatibility issue with my pixel 3.
After 1.5 years, all I get is a non compatibility message.
I have replaced the USB cord and rebooted everything
