Change Android Messages Notification Sound

I am not able to change the Notification sounds for Google Messages, other then changing the system Notification sound in the OS Settings. When I got in to settings in the App I do not see an option to change the notification sound. I do not want to set up individual notification sounds for contacts I want to change the Text Messaging notification sound so I know when a notification I get is a text message and not a system notification.

Update. I found the setting, it is buried in the settings menu of Messages.

Launch Messages

Three Dots at top right
Settings
Advanced
Notifications
Other Notifications
Advanced
Sound

As of this moment 03/07/20. This is how I got there. Click the 3 dots, go to settings. Then notifications, behavior, sounds & more. Then click on incoming messages ( not the on or off switch just the words). Under that part you will find the notification sounds for messages. Wow that took some work. I'm using a S20 ultra on Android 10.

I launch messages

but there is no "Notification" and the rest do not show up.

I used to be able to assign a specific notification tone to my messaging app so that I would know when I get a text, but now I only get the generic notification sound for the system for all notifications, messages being only one of them.

I am running Android One phone with Android version 9

Please help, is there a way to set a specific notification sound for the message app?

How to confuse everyone - now you have to click on the WORD notification to get the extra options..

Why not make things needlessly complicated?

This only changes the sounds for one contact. I've tried to do it many times but only changes for one contact. I want it to change for all messages. Help!

Simple...

Open settings, click Apps and Notifications...

Click See All Apps, and then find the app you're trying to adjust in the list (messages, Facebook, any other app whose notifications you would like to tweak)

Click Notifications.

Here it will differ from app to app, but basically any listing within that menu that has a bell icon next to it represents a particular event that will/can be set to trigger that app to play a sound. Read the description of each one to determine which one you're looking to change, and there should be a nearby heading labeled "Sound" where you can choose the specific alert noise. You may have to click "advanced" before sound will "appear." You can also choose to turn certain notifications off or to vibrate only, and your can change the status of others to "important," allowing your to assign new notifications. Good luck.

These explanations are obsolete as of 4/23/2020. For example, there is no such thing anymore as "other notifications." This is stupid.

I updated my galaxy A20e to android 10 on 22/4/2020. to my surprise option to add my own SMS notification is not there anymore. you have toselect one of boring Samsung has provied. Rubbish.

oh yes, another let down, on my galaxy Prime Core, when i received New SMS, my own notification loudly and screen woke up for 15 minutes to remind me that there is new SMS message waiting for me. It is beyond me why samsung thought that funtion should be removed too. So going back Prime Core.

Funny thing is it seems to be a toggle with a tick box so I ignored it. In fact tap and sub-options open up one of which is sound. Whoever designed this should get a prize for the best hidden setting in Android 10!
