Difficulties with phone number verification when setting up chat features 0 Recommended Answers 0 Replies 809 Upvotes

We recently discovered that some people are having trouble setting up chat features on Messages, specifically when Messages reads the phone number from the SIM. In Messages > Settings > Chat features, users may see “Setting up. Trying to verify <phone_number_from_SIM>”.
With certain carriers, the phone number on the SIM may not be accurate all the time. We are working on adding a feature to override the SIM provided phone number in an upcoming release.
In the meantime, you can contact your carrier and get an updated SIM with the correct number. You can also put in a request to your carrier to issue an OTA, which will update the number on the SIM. (Not all carriers will be able to do this.) To find the phone number on your SIM, please go to Settings > About phone > Phone number.
Separately, if you added an incorrect phone number in Messages yourself, you can correct it by going to Messages > Settings > Chat features and tapping RETRY to update the phone number.
We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to get this fixed as soon as possible.
