Turn on enhanced features for Android Messages

If enhanced features are available for your phone and carrier, you can send messages by Wi-Fi and mobile data (instead of SMS or MMS). You can also add people to groups during conversations, see when others are typing, and use read receipts.

Note: To use these options, everyone in the Messages conversation needs enhanced features on. Availability and data charges vary by device and carrier. Contact your carrier for details.

Turn on enhanced features for the first time

Depending on the carrier, you may see a notification that enhanced features is on. You can use enhanced features with other people who have them on.

If your carrier and device aren’t automatically set up for enhanced features, you may see a notification to “Do more with Android Messages.” If you see this notification, follow these steps to turn on enhanced features: 

  1. Open Android Messages Android Messages.
  2. On the notification that you can "Do more with Android Messages," tap Get Started and then Next.
  3. You'll be asked to let Android Messages stay connected in the background. Tap Yes.
Turn all enhanced features on or off
  1. Open Android Messages Android Messages.
  2. Tap More More and then Settings.
  3. Tap Advanced and then Enhanced features.
  4. Turn Enable enhanced features on or off.

Turn specific enhanced features on or off

Turn read receipts on or off

To let others know that you've read their messages:

  1. Open Android Messages Android Messages.
  2. Tap More More and then Settings.
  3. Tap Advanced and then Enhanced features.
  4. Tap Send read receipts.
Turn typing indicators on or off

To show others when you're typing in a conversation with them:

  1. Open Android Messages Android Messages.
  2. Tap More More and then Settings.
  3. Tap Advanced and then Enhanced features.
  4. Tap Show typing indicators.
Choose how to send attachments
  1. Open Android Messages Android Messages.
  2. Tap More More and then Settings.
  3. Tap Advanced and then Enhanced features.
  4. Tap Backup format for sending attachments.
  5. Choose an option: 
    • SMS with link: Media shared may be accessible by a public link not controlled by Google. 
    • MMS: Send the attachment as a multimedia message (MMS).

See when you're sending by mobile data, SMS, or MMS

The Send icon in the compose bar shows how you're sending a specific message.

  • Send by Wi-Fi or mobile data with enhanced features Send
  • Send by SMS Send by SMS
  • Send by MMS Send by MMS

Add to, leave, or name a group conversation

If your group has enhanced features turned on, you can change options for group conversations:

  • ​​To add people to a group from within a conversation, tap More More and then People & options and then Add people.
  • To leave a group from within a conversation, tap More More and then People & options and then Leave group.
  • You can name a group when you create it. You can't change a group's name after a conversation starts.
