Create RCS groups & customize group icons

You can set up a group and select an image or an illustration to represent the group. This icon can be an image from the gallery, Google Photos, a new photo taken with your camera, or picked from a library of illustrations.

Create a group with a custom icon

  1. On your mobile device, open Messages .
  2. Tap Start chat and then Create group .
  3. Select contacts you want to add to a group.
  4. Tap Next and then Edit .
  5. Pick an image from:
    • Camera: To take a new photo, tap the Camera .
    • Gallery: To pick a photo already on your device, tap Gallery .
    • Google Photos: To pick a photo stored in your Google Photos, tap Google Photos Photos.
    • Illustrations: To choose a graphic, tap Illustrations .
  6. Tap an image.
  7. Adjust the crop and rotation of the image.
  8. Tap Next.

Add a custom group icon

Important: Group icons are only available to users with the most recent version of Google Messages installed. The group icon won't be available to iPhone users with RCS messages turned on.

  1. On your mobile device, open Messages .
  2. Open a group conversation.
  3. Tap the group name.
  4. To the right of the contact photos, tap Edit .
  5. Pick an image from:
    • Camera: To take a new photo, tap the Camera .
    • Gallery: To pick a photo already on your device, tap Gallery .
    • Google Photos: To pick a photo stored in your Google Photos, tap Google Photos Photos.
    • Illustrations: To choose a graphic, tap Illustrations .
  6. Tap an image.
  7. Adjust the crop and rotation of the image.
  8. Tap Next.

Tip: If you want to change your group icon, use the same steps to choose a new icon.
