You can set up a group and select an image or an illustration to represent the group. This icon can be an image from the gallery, Google Photos, a new photo taken with your camera, or picked from a library of illustrations.
Create a group with a custom icon
- On your mobile device, open Messages

- Tap Start chat
Create group
.
- Select contacts you want to add to a group.
- Tap Next

- Pick an image from:
- Camera: To take a new photo, tap the Camera
.
- Gallery: To pick a photo already on your device, tap Gallery
.
- Google Photos: To pick a photo stored in your Google Photos, tap Google Photos
.
- Illustrations: To choose a graphic, tap Illustrations
.
- Camera: To take a new photo, tap the Camera
- Tap an image.
- Adjust the crop and rotation of the image.
- Tap Next.
Add a custom group icon
Important: Group icons are only available to users with the most recent version of Google Messages installed. The group icon won't be available to iPhone users with RCS messages turned on.
- On your mobile device, open Messages

- Open a group conversation.
- Tap the group name.
- To the right of the contact photos, tap Edit
.
- Pick an image from:
- Camera: To take a new photo, tap the Camera
.
- Gallery: To pick a photo already on your device, tap Gallery
.
- Google Photos: To pick a photo stored in your Google Photos, tap Google Photos
.
- Illustrations: To choose a graphic, tap Illustrations
.
- Camera: To take a new photo, tap the Camera
- Tap an image.
- Adjust the crop and rotation of the image.
- Tap Next.
Tip: If you want to change your group icon, use the same steps to choose a new icon.
