RCS is now available for texting between Android and iPhones. Learn how to turn on RCS chats on your Android phone (link).

Update a sent message

You can edit a Rich Communication Services (RCS), SMS or MMS message after you send it. This feature works in:

  • RCS
  • One-on-one conversations with iPhone users who also have RCS chats turned on
  • Group RCS chats, even if other participants don't have editing capabilities

Editing is enabled in the app only, not on the web UI.

The ability to edit a sent message expires after 15 minutes, regardless of whether the recipient has read the message or responded to it.

An 'Edited' label appears above the message in the conversation for both the sender and recipient.

Edit a sent message

  1. On your device, open Google Messages .
  2. Touch and hold a sent message in a conversation.
  3. At the top of the screen, tap Edit Edit.
    • If you touch and hold a message after 15 minutes, Edit Edit won't be available.
  4. Edit the message.
  5. To update the sent message, tap the tick Check.
    • To exit the editing view, next to 'Edit message', tap Exit Tap.

If a recipient doesn't support the edit feature, they'll receive a new message marked with a '*'.
