Draft messages with Magic Compose

Magic Compose is an experimental feature within Google Messages. With Google's generative AI technology, Magic Compose crafts stylised, suggested responses with the context of your messages.

Use Magic Compose to get suggestions to start or reply to a conversation or to rewrite a drafted message in different styles.

How your data is used

Important: Data rates may apply when you use Magic Compose. Check with your mobile operator for details.

Google doesn't store messages or use them to train machine learning models. If you use Magic Compose in open beta:

  • Up to 20 previous messages, which includes emojis, reactions and URLs, are sent to Google's servers and used to make suggestions relevant to your conversation.
  • Messages with attachments, voice messages and images aren't sent to Google servers, but image captions and voice transcriptions can be sent.

Conversation privacy

If you're on Pixel 8 Pro or Samsung S24, the Magic Compose feature is powered by an on-device model called Gemini Nano:

  • The data is processed on your phone without leaving the device and no messages are sent to Google.
  • To generate a message suggestion, the model uses the 20 previous messages for context.
  • To get a rewrite suggestion in different styles, the model uses one draft message.

For all other devices, to generate rewrite suggestions based on the style that you choose, Magic Compose sends one draft message to Google servers. Then Google discards the message from the servers. When you don't use Magic Compose, no messages are sent to Google.
