How to fix: Preemptive item disapproval for policy or data violation—inappropriate images

Ensure that product images meet requirements

Some of your items have images with promotional text (for example, retailer logos or calls to action) or obstructing elements, such as watermarks. Learn more about image requirements

If we notice that a significant number of your items have images that violate our image requirements, we issue a warning. Affected offers remain approved and ads continue serving during a 28-day grace period. If a significant number of your items still have problematic images after this period, we activate a preemptive item disapproval

The preemptive item disapproval for inappropriate images is a feature that automatically detects images that are likely to contain promotional overlays and then disapproves the corresponding items. Since this is an automated process, it is not 100% accurate. It’s possible that some unproblematic images may be disapproved or that some problematic images may remain approved.

You can get your products approved by updating your images and requesting a review.

Instructions

Step 1: See the affected products

  1. Sign in to your Merchant Center account.
  2. Click Products on the navigation menu, then click Diagnostics.
  3. Click the Account issues tab to see current issues affecting your account.

Step 2: Review your images

For each item, review and update with links to appropriate images. The quickest way to update your images is to change the URL provided in the image link attribute to point to the correct product image. Keeping the URL the same and serving different content will lead to a longer time before your items are updated, as we only fetch images every couple of weeks if image URLs remain unchanged. You can force a faster fetch of the image by changing the image URL provided in the image_link attribute.

Step 3: Resubmit your product data

Once you've resubmitted your product data with updated image links, wait for the new images to be crawled. Most of the items with new images should get re-approved automatically, provided they meet the image requirements. 

Step 4: Request a review

To have preemptive item disapproval lifted and the remaining items reapproved, request an account review.
