Encoding settings for garbled text

Experiencing garbled text in your browser? Learn how to set character encoding in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge or use a Chrome encoding app to render your text properly. For Chrome, discover recommended extensions to resolve garbled text quickly.

To adjust your browser's encoding settings, follow the browser-specific steps below.

What is garbled text?

Garbled text, often referred to as mojibake, occurs when a browser displays text using the wrong character encoding. This mismatch turns legible words into a confusing jumble of random symbols or question marks.

To ensure web pages and data files render properly, browsers typically use Unicode (UTF-8). This is the universal standard for character encoding on the web.

  1. Visit the Chrome Web Store.
  2. At the top left, select Extensions.
