My son cannot get on Google Meet sessions.

- using a district-issued Chromebook

- trying to connect to a Google Meet hosted by a teacher within the same education domain

- stuck on "getting ready" page

- everyone else (other 12 students) had no problem getting into the meet

- tried to join another Meet session hosted by a different individual  within the same education domain. He couldn't get into that session either (stuck on the same "getting ready" page)

- when using the same login from a different (non-district-issued) device, he can get in right away

- we also cleared cache, rebooted the Chromebook

What is causing this problem? Is there a setting in Chromebook or in a browser, or a Google Meet that prevents a user from joining?

Please help!

Same thing happening to me. Apparently it’s a known Google issue but I can’t find anything about it. Updated Chrome, cleared cookies, currently having to let him use my work laptop and not do my job. I hate this.

A tech specialist in our district thinks it's a camera issue.
It could be, but my kid gets stuck at the "Getting Ready" page, not on the page about choosing options for "Camera and Audio". It's possible Google Meet tries to initialize the camera before showing the page for Camera and Audio options. I have no way to know.

We still don't know what's causing it or how to fix it.

I hope you will be able to solve the issue for your device. Good luck! Good luck to us all!

Hi NeedWorkingDevice: does it help if :
1. All extensions are disabled in Chrome?
2. The camera is turned off?

When you say it gets stuck on the "getting ready" page, do you mean the page where you ask to join the meeting?

Repeated issue - getting ready to join circle spins repeatedly. Reloading, shutting down, clearing history doesn't help.

We couldn't fix the problem and returned the Chromebook.
It could be an extension problem. I know the laptop had at least three extensions installed (saw the icons on the top right).
Unfortunately we can't test the device any longer.
Thank you for your time and efforts to help us.

Using a different web browser is what worked., but I am closed to google chrome. Bing is what worked

Removing Google Chrome worked unfortunately. I had eliminated extensions to no avail. I used Bing to get into Google Meets no problem. I like Google Chrome as a search engine, I hope one day Google figures out why it did not work with Meets. It worked for 6 months and then one day it stopped. I cannot pinpoint what changed. Anyway, thank you for your help.

This started happening to me recently when I set up my  home network with double NAT.  Why would I do that? Here's why:

AT&T's modem/router/box for fiber doesn't allow the user to set the primary and secondary DNS servers. This is fine for most users, but doesn't work for me because I use pihole to filter out ads. When I did some research, I found that most users were working around this by setting up a second router, thus the double NAT situation.

The solution? Every time I have to connect to meetings for work I physically connect my desktop directly to the AT&T box (thus side-stepping the NAT issue). Ideally I'd like a better solution, but it's what works for me even if it's annoying and clunky.

It's worth noting that other video chat clients like Zoom do not require this work-around. Zoom works fine for me regardless of how I have my home network set up.

having the same issue here. Was working fine for months. Now it just wont load. This is also happening in google hangouts. I have cleared everything out of chrome allowed camera and audio rebooted, signed out etc.. nothing works. If I launch google meet or hangouts in firefox it fully works with no issues. So its something with chrome.

I found a solution for me! I have a Chromebook from my school district and I found out that it had something to do with the browser. So I went to the Google play store on the school Chromebook and downloaded the google meet app. It ended up working! Hope you found this helpful!

I had the same issue today. I could not download the Google Meet app due to restriction from admin. I update the Chromebook OS and it worked! If the problem comes back, I’ll respond again.

I also see similar thing if camera is broken on Chromebook, If i go back to 85 i just get an error that it cant find the camera, but in 86 it endlessly loading meet if it can't find a camera. its seems to be that the handling of broken cameras has changed, go back to 85 or older, with usb-stick to test, and then upgrade, and you will probabley see that it really is a broken camera issue.

Mine started today.  The only thing that worked was USING A DIFFERENT BROWSER, Microsoft Edge (explorer) instead of google chrome browser.  Very inconvenient and took a while to figure it out.  Why it isn't working consistently in Google chrome browser. It was working fine in Google chrome for one class, nothing at all changed, but the next class was stuck on the getting ready page and that thankfully worked in time as an emergency idea.

Google meets really needs to fix the education portion for google meets and the connections to classroom google meets.

I'm getting the same problem myself, could I get some help?

I'm taking online classes because my school has switched to online so I need to be able to join google meets. I am using google meets, I'm running the latest version of Chrome, on windows 10, on a school gmail, trying to join a video call, no extensions installed except the base ones my administrator has installed. Every time I try to join a meeting it gets stuck on "Getting ready..." I have tried several other browsers and the same issue occurs: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and even old Internet Explorer.

Nathan,

Is your camera working OK?

Have you tried temporarily disabling the few extensions your admin installed?

Are you running any security software that might block camera access?

If you sign in with your personal Google account, does Meet work?

My Camera seems to be working fine in the camera app and in discord. And my school administrator hasn't given me access to change the extensions.

But I believe the problem may be linked with a new version of my graphics card driver, since it was the only thing that changed before google meets encountered the bug. The driver is less than a week old and doesn't have any patches.

I'm hoping that's the problem, because in the mean time I have to use a old slow laptop to connect to school.

Also, my firewall and security don't seem to be conflicting with it.

We did get this resolved. In the spring, a student could join Meet, even if there was an issue with the camera. Now, the Meet will not initialize without it being functional.

Nathan, can you try contacting support for the driver? Or seeing if anyone else with the same graphics card has this issue?

*I've fixed the problem at the moment*

I put up a support ticket on their website and found more people with the same issue, I was able to revert back my driver and now it's back to normal and works.

yes. it did not work. What worked was disabling and then reanabling the camera.

same problem as Hunter, thanks for showing that screenshot;
Meet worked fine for months in 2020 for me from this Chromebook then suddenly stopped working one day last autumn;
it seemed to coincide with the update to GSuite;
have tried all the fixes suggested above;
currently I can only access Meet from a borrowed Windows or Apple device... the irony, right?

If you have a bad internet connection, that should be your #1 suspect. Meet tends to load more slowly when you're not connected to the internet. Also, make sure the system admin has not blocked the server. If you want, you can try again with this link to the google meet home page.
