Support deaf students (class lecture) using Meet that partner w sign language interpreter 0 Recommended Answers 3 Replies 36 Upvotes

Our College employs sign language interpreters who work with deaf students. They sign communications both in-person (and virtual) for lectures, student meetings, and one-on-one academic scheduling and advising sessions. For a Google G Suite Meet-based lecture, our interpreters also log into a student's lecture class. Due to class size (and when their student actually logs into the lecture) interpreters do not see their student onscreen at all times to communicate. How can interpreters 'lock' into a deaf student(s) onscreen camera during a Meet lecture? And vice versa, how can a deaf student always see an interpreter and professor for the entire lecture?

Many thanks

I'm also an interpreter.  The only solution I have found to this is logging in to the meeting, and then setting up a seperate device with a meeting just with the Deaf students and the interpreter.

The other Meet work around I have discovered is if there is a powerpoint/slides presentation being shown on a shared screen.  Dial in for the audio connection,  and mute your mic and speakers on your computer.

You can then join the meeting twice by video on the same computer.  You can pin the shared screen in one connection and the person you want to see on the other.  I am assuming if there isn't ashared screen you could do the same, but pin the student and the professor in separate connections on the same device.

I'm also an interpreter, although in the elementary environment, so this information may neither help nor apply.  Still....

First, add " [Interpreter] " before your profile name (as you might be able to see in my label?).
This puts your window ALWAYS FIRST (or in the top corner) of the meeting's list of participants, which means your image will not move around when people join or leave.  Your student(s) will always know where to find you.

Second, as class begins, HIDE ALL PARTICIPANTS except the ones you must see -- presumably your student(s), the instructor, and the presentation screen.  (Students can also do this to isolate the people THEY wish to see.)
Unfortunately, you currently have to HIDE them *individually*, as there is no "Hide ALL" option.  But you HIDE by mousing over their image and clicking on the [eye icon].  You can also pull up the participant list and click on each participant there.
NOTE: As people show up late or drop out and re-enter, you will have to RE-HIDE them individually as they pop up.
IMPORTANT: The "HIDE PARTICIPANT" option is NOT on the regular Meet platform, you have to have one of the extensions to have that option -- "Grid View Extension" or "Grid View Extension (Fix)".  I currently use the Fix extension.

Last, PIN the participants you MUST see.  I'm not sure I've seen a huge benefit from this, but it is a feature that is supposed to help keep people in place.

Now, the next feature I'm looking for is HOW TO LOCK MY SCREEN, so that my pinned people STAY PUT and others don't pop up in and out of it.  Still researching that, so any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Good luck to us all!

Can you pin more than one person? If so how do you do that?
