Is it possible to limit allowing access to a Meet to only people invited by the creator? 1 Recommended Answer 9 Replies 181 Upvotes

The school I work at has had a few instances of students (some using private accounts) not invited by the teacher getting entry to a Meet. They may have found the meet by randomly searching possible meet titles (many of them have WAY too much time on their hands) or may have been invited by a friend. At least once, a student got into a class without the teacher getting or accepting the student's request. Could they have been invited and accepted by a friend? How can we prevent that?

Is there a way to limit access to Meets to only the school accounts?

I have a question that goes along with this question as I, too, had students join my meet that were not in my class on google classroom.

Is there a way to limit the students that can join your google meet to only the ones on that particular class' google classroom? I set up my link through google classroom so only my google classroom students should have access (however others outside of my google classroom joined).

Hi Megan,

To resolve this issue, please ask the Administrator on your domain to set up students and teachers on separate Organisational units.

Please follow the explanations from the recommended answer above. In addition check for the most recent improvements related to Meet features for distance learning.  The details are in the post pinned in our Google Meet Help Community:
https://support.google.com/meet/thread/39015517?hl=en&msgid=39015517

Also, always report issues. To report or send a feature request:
  • Select the Feedback icon (speech bubble with an exclamation mark)
  • Describe the issue or share your ideas.
  • Include the tag #FeedbackMeet
  • For a feature request include the tag #MeetFR
  • Select Include screenshot to help identify the issue.
  • Select Send.

Stay healthy!

If the participating students do not have an institutional account (i.e. the domain of the school) but have been registered in the classrooms with their own private accounts, the described mechanism does not work

Hi Yik Sheng Lee,

The integration of Meet for Classroom ( Set up Meet for distance learning, link in the recommended answer) ensures that:

Only teachers can access class settings to create the Meet link. All Meet links created by the Classroom integration are nicknamed links, so students can’t join without the instructor present.

Now that the owner has more control over who is in the Meet, it may be better to rely on behavioral contracts and discipline procedures which individual schools can implement.

Better controls may well be on the way, and under consideration. I’d encourage you to submit feedback and feature requests for these. But, please, if you wish to do so via this community, create a new post, rather than presenting different topics under someone else’s post.

Stay healthy,
