Use Companion mode for inclusive hybrid meetings.
0
We are launching Companion mode as a second screen for more inclusive hybrid meetings, especially if you are joining on Google Meet hardware or Nest Hub Max. You may have heard about this here and here.

Here’s a quick video showcasing this feature in use. You can use this article for details on how to join and use Companion mode as a meeting host, presenter and participant.

We will be leveraging this forum post to keep you updated on how the rollout is progressing, answer FAQs and share any known issues -- as you might be aware, with big changes such as this one, it takes a few weeks for everyone to see the new experience.

Rollout status
  • We have just begun rolling out Companion Mode to laptop and desktop users. This is currently available to 1% of Rapid Release domains, Google Workspace Individual customers and users with personal Google accounts. Tip: You can use the short link g.co/companion to quickly launch Companion Mode from your device.
  • Important: Please follow comments in this thread to keep track of the rollout. Press the “Subscribe” button on this post to be directly notified with any comments.

FAQs

Who can use Companion mode, and what features are available?
Companion mode is rolling out to all Google Meet users. The availability of features, such as hand raising, recording, polls, livestream, depends on your Google Workspace edition. Learn more about Google Workspace editions.

Do Companion mode connections count toward the participant limit?
Yes, Companion mode connections and presentations each count toward the participant limit. The people icon, which appears on the bottom right of the meeting window on your laptop/desktop, shows the current number of participants.

I'm not in a meeting room. Can I use Companion mode as a second screen—to view presentations or captions more clearly?
Yes. If you're viewing the presentation on a second screen, you can also unpin the presentation from your primary screen. Unpinning the presentation lets you view more video feeds from participants on your primary screen. However, improving collaboration equity in hybrid meetings is the main reason to use Companion mode.

Known issues
  • Grid view during the rollout—People who don’t have Companion mode see Companion mode participants as tiles labeled "Name (Companion)" in the participant grid. For example, Quinn Taylor (Companion). For people who have Companion mode, Companion tiles are hidden from the grid.
  • Breakout rooms—If you're a host, you can set up breakout sessions when you connect using Companion mode. And you can assign people using Companion mode to breakout sessions. However, people using Companion mode can’t speak or hear in breakout sessions, and you can’t assign meeting-room hardware or Nest Hub Max to breakout rooms. You can leverage these options to setup Breakout Rooms in Hybrid meetings.
