Visual updates to the Google Meet UI

Inspired by your feedback, we have made a couple of updates to the Google Meet UI. You may have read about these changes either here or here

We will be leveraging this forum post to answer FAQs, keep everyone updated on how the rollout is progressing and share any known issues -- as you might be aware, with big changes such as this one, it takes a few weeks for everyone to see the new experience. 

Rollout status

As of this moment (May 24th) , we have just started the rollout. The new UI is currently available to the following users:
  • 1% of the consumer Meet users (users using Meet with a personal Google account) 
  • 1% of the Workspace domains which are on rapid release 
  • For Workspace domains which are on scheduled release, the rollout is expected to go to 1% on June 1st.

FAQ’s

Is the Google Meet UI rolling out to all users? 
Yes! The new Meet UI will be available to all users all over the world

Is the Google Meet UI rolling out on all devices/platforms?
The new Google Meet UI is currently only launching for users using Meet through a laptop/ computer. It will be launching in the coming weeks to Google Meet conference rooms

How can users access the new UI?
The new UI will automatically be made available to all the users as the rollout progresses. Users aren’t required to take any actions to see the new UI

Will the users be able to opt out from the new experience? 
Yes, the users will be able to revert to the legacy experience on a per-meeting basis until June 10th using the greenroom banner, or when the rollout reaches 100% of the users (whichever comes later)

Known issues

1) You might notice some unexpected behavior such as missing video tiles or the captions being cut off. This is caused by 3rd Party Meet extensions and you can read more here about it’s implications and next steps.  

2) Users experiencing a “mirroring effect” when screen sharing: We recommend that you “share a tab” instead of a “window” or “entire screen” for a smooth presenting experience. Additionally, when sharing a tab, make sure that you are sharing the right tab/different tab than your meeting tab.

3) Users on a Windows device  while using a chrome browser might experience flickering on the presented content: A restart of your Chrome browser should assist with the issue.

4) Blue outline is occasionally on a non-speaking participant : A fix for this is on the way and should be live soon. With the new Meet UI, you should now see a blue outline around the active speakers’ tile

Rollout status:

The New UI experience is currently available to 10% of the Meet consumer users and 10% of the rapid release Workspace domains. 

As shared above, the new UI will begin rolling out to the scheduled release Workspace domains starting June 1st.

New Known Issue: The chat message input box seems to be disappearing for users who are using a Chromebook on tablet mode. 

Workaround: Chromebook users are advised to use Meet in laptop mode (Steps) as we explore a fix

iPad users (on a Safari Browser): The chat message input box might be partially hidden in some cases but is still usable. You can also try using Meet through the Meet iOS app in the interim. (Download the app here)

Rollout Status

The New UI experience is currently available to 25% of the Meet consumer users and 25% of the rapid release Workspace domains. 

As shared above, the new UI will begin rolling out to the scheduled release Workspace domains starting June 1st.

Tip: Optimize your meeting experience 

Based on your requirements, you might only want to focus on the presented content or just focus on the meeting participants. In some cases, you might want to focus on both the presentation and the participants. Here are some suggestions on how you can optimize your meeting experience to suit your requirements:

1) To only view the presented content, you can first pin the presentation and then use Spotlight Mode in Google Meet. Steps here on how to select from amongst the various layouts available on a desktop/laptop device. 

2) You can also select the number of participant tiles you see in grid view. Google Meet allows you to see up to 49 participants and you can use the slider (steps here) to select how many tiles you see in a video meeting. 

3) To view the presentation and also see participants at the same time, you can unpin your presentation so that it becomes a tile in the grid. Checkout this video for steps. 

4) To only focus on others and not see yourself as part of the grid, you can always minimize your self view. Check this video for steps.

The New UI experience has now been made available to 50% of the Meet consumer users and 50% of the rapid release Workspace domains. 

The new UI will now begin rolling out to the scheduled release Workspace domains starting June 2nd. 

Upcoming fixes: 

There was earlier an issue regarding the chat message input box disappearing for users who were using a Chromebook on tablet mode. A fix for this is currently getting tested and should begin rolling out soon.
