Limit mobile data use on Google Meet

If you're running out of monthly data on your mobile plan, you can lower how much data you're using in the Google Meet app. Bear in mind that calls in the Meet app work over Wi-Fi and mobile data so you can make calls anywhere that you have Internet access.

Important: When your device is connected to Wi-Fi, Meet still uses a small amount of mobile data. This keeps your conversation going if the Wi-Fi drops. To stop using mobile data as a backup, follow the instructions in the 'Turn mobile data off' section below.

Connect to Wi-Fi

Before you make or answer calls, make sure that your mobile device is connected to a Wi-Fi network.

If you want to lower your data use or change your call quality, you can limit, increase or switch mobile data on or off.

Limit mobile data usage

If you can't connect to a Wi-Fi network, Meet automatically lowers your connections to 1 Mbps.

For legacy calls (previously known as Duo):

1. On your Android device, open the Google Meet app .
2. In the top left, tap Menu .
3. Tap Settings Calling settings In-call settings.
4. Turn on Data-saving mode.

For meetings or Meet calls (available only for Business and Edu):

1. On your Android device, open the Google Meet app .
2. In the top left, tap Menu .
3. Tap Settings General.
   • Note: Users with personal accounts will see this under Settings Meeting settings.
4. Turn on Limit data usage.

Turn mobile data off

If you want to make sure that Meet uses only Wi-Fi and not your mobile data, you can turn mobile data off on your phone.

1. On your Android device, open the Settings app .
2. Tap Data usage.
3. Turn Mobile data off.
