We're excited to announce that Google Maps on Android will now display a safety feature which will give you an alert when your driver has deviated from the Maps-suggested route. It will also allow you to share your trip with your family/friends! The “Stay Safer” feature goes live today in India.
This feature is disabled by default, so you'll have to manually turn it on. Simply tap on the "Stay Safer" button !
You can click on "Get off-route alerts" option to be notified when your driver deviates from the Google suggested route to your destination. If your driver deviates more than 0.5KM from the Google Maps suggested route, your phone will buzz with a prominent notification, and you can tap it to see where you are compared to the original route.
Then, you can also choose to “Share live trip” with friends and family directly from that screen so they know you are off route and can keep track of your journey, and take appropriate action, if required.
Note: The off-route push notification is sent to the user when the driver has deviated from the Google Maps route by >0.5 kilometers.
We hope you enjoy this new feature! Stay Safe!
