Maps not working with global roaming

I live in Australia but I am currently in New Zealand, so I am using global roaming. Google Maps wouldn't load directions (which, when it works, is great for catching public transport). I rebooted and it worked, but soon after it went back to not working. It work once more all of a sudden, but now nothing. On hotel wifi it works as expected.
I was blaming Google Maps but I now find RadioApp doesn't work either. So maybe it's a network problem. I've played with a lot of mobile network and roaming settings, but no luck.

welcome to the google maps community forum!

you are sure you have roaming privileges for data access?

Hi , Am currently having same issue and everything works fine except google maps direction and google translate but when in wifi it works fine.  Which makes believe something to do with roaming plan . Still looking for a fix .

Same here, everything works, I can watch a HD video, but maps gets stuck on anything, a simple search and that thing crashes

hi ricky, you can use google maps to search? what happens when you tap directions from within google maps?

Hi cfanatic
I search successfully in Google Chrome. Maps just opens from Chrome. Opening and Maps successfully recognising what was opened from Chrome is random, so I haven't worked out what results in success.
In Maps, roads and other features load, but searching or direction requests in Maps just mean waiting.

Based on the behaviour of other apps, I'm now thinking it's not just Maps, but I can't work out why apps like Chrome are fine.

hi ricky, it may be restrictions from your own home service provider, or the roaming service provider. maybe contact the service provider/s to find out?

are you able to change to a different roaming service provider?

or maybe consider using a local sim card?

I'm having the same problem in the US. It's a big problem. I've cleared cache/data, uninstalled, reinstalled etc. it will work on wifi not roaming. Maps does work fine in the browser however so this is just a mobile app issue. It suggests there's a network performance issue but this makes no sense if everything else is working including maps on the browser.
Please resolve!

Same issue. Google Maps Beta user, Pixel 7 Pro, Google Fi as provider. I travel all over the world - I'm an international tour guide. When landing in Australia from NZ, with Google Fi activated (via Telstra the Fi provider in AU) suddenly Google Maps takes 10 minutes to resolve a route, every time, without exception. Ran a speed test on the Telstra / Fi connection and it was in excess of 18Mbps each way, so not a data rate problem.
Tried using a different mobile data service, same problem. But if I connect to WiFi and Maps works fine / normal. Switch back to mobile data and it's back to 10 minute resolutions.

Just landed back in NZ, tested Google Maps route resolution and it's back to fast/normal.

My service provider got me to reset my network settings in Android. This resulted in my first Google Maps search working after a phone restart, but subsequent searches did not. So it could have just been the usual intermittent performance.

I found a solution - going into app info for maps (long press icon)  clear cache and data, then press the three vertical dots at top right uninstall app updates. I assume this takes the app back to the firmware version - it fixes the problem for both our phones.

Worked for me as well, thank you!

Ok so also followed above suggestions of rolling back the app version (now on 10 from 11) and it's working again so must be something on Google's side.

Same problem and same solution, it seems. Australian resident visiting the UK and Google maps have been dreadful since I got here. Just followed the advice about uninstalling updates and it looks like it may now be working.

hi user 7166067822971607813, welcome to the google maps community forum!

could you please try what some of the other users have done?

uninstall google maps app updates - please make sure auto update is disabled for google maps app first.

hi user5165423731, sorry, thought you had the same problem as others in this discussion thread - my attention is on this particular problem for the moment.

I am encountering the same issue in the US using a roaming SIM from Holafly which is using the AT&T network. I'm using the regular release channel of Google Maps on a Pixel 7. My wife is experiencing the same issue on a Pixel 6a.

Simon's suggestion below to uninstall all Maps app updates seems to resolve the issue for me, so this must be something broken on the Google side.
