Adding stop to timeline creates weird dotted line

I noticed that a route saved on my timeline did not show some places I visited. So I added one of them to the timeline, as on the attached screenshot. The place is a shop. I parked in the street right outside.
What are those grey dotted lines that have appeared there? How do I get rid of them? They stretch right back to my start point and forward to my destination.

I have just encountered the same problem, only not with adding a place, but enabling Google Photos in my time line. I thought maybe it was the dates of the photos being outside the timeline place parameters, but they were not, because they show up in the right position on the left sidebar. Like OP's screenshot, there are two grey dotted lines, except they are curved, and connect each end of the route to a visited place where I took the photos. There are no gaps in the route and the visited place was always there, not added afterwards like OP did.
