How can I stop google maps from forcing/changing my X-Canada route to go through the United States?

When I am trying to plan a trip from Alberta to Ontario, google maps keeps switching my route to go through the United States. When it initially shows the different route options, I select the one that does not detour to the United States. Yet, every time I add a stop along my preferred route… For some reason it keeps switching it to go through the United States. Is there not a setting that I can select to prevent it from making me go through there? I just want to see Canada on this trip.

The function of Navigation is for finding the best route between two destinations.  You don't wish to do that, as you state you wish to use "your route", which makes it unclear why you are using Navigation if you already have a route selected.

With that said, if you're just trying to get visual representation of your route, you have two choices:

  1. You can use Google My Maps to create a route.  These can then be overlaid in the main Maps app, but cannot be used for navigation.
  2. If instead you just want to set the general route and have Google provide the best route between major stops, you'll need to add multiple destinations to your route.  The instructions to do so are part way down https://support.google.com/maps/answer/144339.
