22 years later, error still not fixed

Hello.... we live on Chandon Lane, Huntington Beach CA 92648. This is a private / gated community and every time somebody types our address into Google Maps, they get routed to enter off from Saddleback Lane. This our neighborhood’s “back gate” and there is no keypad and no remote to open that gate. We constantly, for 22 years now, have to tell people “ignore Google maps, DO NOT enter from Saddleback Ln / Garfield Ave, please go to the FRONT gate off of Summit Dr / Ashton Dr.” Even after reporting Saddleback as a CLOSED street at least 10 times, as of today, the directions still take people to Saddleback Ln back gate and there is a simple “private road” warning listed. That does not help them!!! They need the CORRECT directions to the correct entry gate on Ashton Dr. Can we PLEASE get a manager involved who knows how to fix this?

Hi Tom,

I'm sorry you're having an issue with this - I know it can be incredibly frustrating.

Currently, Google Maps doesn't have a function that allows you to report a gate at a road.  The same issue occurs for streets that are only open or one-way during certain times of day. It's a gap in maps that has been reported to Google - hopefully they'll address this at some point.

As a stop-gap to avoid the issues with drivers and deliveries, if no one has an address on the segment of road you submitted, you can go directly into maps and report that segment of road as closed permanently. This will at least route Google Maps directions away from that location and only allow folks who live there to enter that way.

I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but hopefully it causes less frustration until Google addresses this.  You can find specific steps on fixing (closing) a road here:

Can you please explain, how will YOU assist? Do you work for Google? You are asking many questions, but I suspect you have no power to assist in the fix, which explains why you say to "post a sign". The issue is to FIX GOOGLE MAPS. Nothing more, nothing less. So far, I have zero reason to believe you can even assist... but perhaps I am wrong.

hi tom,

i am here to help, but you need to help me to help you. without more information, would be difficult to help you.

if it is just a matter of putting up a sign, i would not need to ask any more questions. i would leave you to sort it out yourself.

no, i do not work for google, or represent google in any way. i am a user, just like you.

but no one needs to work for google to get this fixed - as users, there are ways available to all of us to get this done.

as i alluded to earlier, a sign would fix this for you, and all of the residents of the 80 addressses. that is something all of you can do to fix it, that needs no other party's assistance, and for which no other party has any control and/or influence.

with a good sign, google maps can continue to direct to saddleback lane, and it would be nothing more than a small inconvenience for users.

if google maps suddenly disappeared from the face of the earth, does the problem disappear with it? is it reasonable to believe that another similar service that may be dominant in google maps' absence similarly route the same way?

you are asking for a solution (a) to a problem (b). this isn't a google maps only problem. it isn't necessarily unique to google maps.

but i understand - many use google maps, and fixing google maps helps tremendously, even if it does not fix the core problem permanently.

i can only help fix if you help me to help you.

cfanatic, I think you have made it abundantly clear that this is not a situation isolated to Google Maps but, since this forum is dedicated solely to Google Maps, and since Google Maps is the issue that the OP is referring to, providing external solutions to the situation does not really seem germane.

Additionally, your suggestion of putting up a sign negates the inconvenience of initially being routed to a location that does not allow entry to those without previous access authorization.

If the problem is one with routing, that should be the focus of the discussion and, if the situation isn't being corrected at the user suggestion level and they've come here for help, then it should be escalated.
