Uploading geotagged images from my mobile

Summarize the issue:
i'm going to bike around iceland for 6 weeks and would like to update my position via some cool photos as i bike around.

i'll have a HTC desire with me which does the whole geotagging thing.
is it possible to upload the geotagged photos directly to gmaps? how about from a mobile phone?

I do not know what application you are using in your mobile device but if it runs on android you can also install My Tracks from Google that make it very easy to upload your recorded tracks to your My Maps in Google Maps. You can download My Tracks from the application Market.

thats exactly what i'm looking for but the FAQ and videos don't show if its possible to add pics or how to do it?
if you add a picture, will it show up in your My Maps at the right geo location?

i would try it but i don't have an android mobile....yet ;)

There are a few points I want to bring up,

You wrote

however, you mentioned in your first post that you own a HTC desire mobile device. If that is the case, then you already have an android mobile.
Android is the OS that powers the device. Visit the Market application in your device and try out My Tracks.
The continuous use of the GPS function will have a big effect on battery charge thiugh.

I could not find an easy way to do that.
If you upload your geotagged pictures to a Google's picasa album, you should be able to see them mapped, within Picasa's web site, to Google Maps. I have not found an easy way to put them directly in one of your My Maps in Google Maps.

If you use My Tracks, you could add markers/waypoints along your route at the places where you take the pictures.
I was able to add an image to the description section of the marker/waypoint but it requires to write the html code manually, something I am guessing you may not want to do while bicycling through Iceland.
Probably it would be best to do all that at the end of the day if you have access to the internet from a laptop/desktop. Just upload the daily tracks to My Maps and edit the markers/waypoints on the computer using either html coding or RichText in order to add the link to your picture. A picasa album would probably be a good place to store your pictures since it is easy to obtain the URL for the picture.

"i'll have a HTC desire with me"
i don't own the DESIRE yet, but soon will :)

either way, i appreciated your replies.
i'm hoping to do the following with ONLY the DESIRE

- take a geo tagged picture
- resize it for the web
- upload it to MY MAPS and have it displayed at the appropriate geo location
- share that link to MY MAP with my friends on facebook

i guess once my DESIRE arrives in 2 weeks i'll be able to play around with it but i can't be the only person on earth who wants to do this. there has got to be an easy way????

i like your suggestions with the MY TRACKS waypoints and HTML code which i could do but i don't want to take the laptop only for this.

I understand now what you are trying to accomplish.

The third step
- upload it to MY MAPS and have it displayed at the appropriate geo location
is not currently possible, there is no implementation in the android camera or gallery to upload the picture directly to one of your My Maps.
The only way I found was what I described above, which is a little cumbersome.

I would suggest, instead to upload the pictures to a public picasa album of your trip.
You just need to share the album, that it is easy to do from the picasa album interface, and since the pictures are geotagged your friends and family will be given the choice to see the location of the pictures in a Google map inside the picasa interface.

There are some fundamental problems here with lack of interface within Google Apps. I am trying to do the same for a long train trip and want to post photos automatically.

Some of the problems u will encounter.

1) Picasa loses geotag data when transferred from my android phone. This is known probleam and am told is a feauture of phone and not Picasa
2) My X10 does geotag but i am strugglingto find a way to safely edit pic (crop and resize) without losing EXIF
3) when i upland a pic to My Maps using the placemark it will not automativally locate itself grom the geotag info
4) I would like to find a way that shoes thumbnails on My Maps instead of placemark

On the positive side one way that does work is by using the App "My Maps Editor". Load your map go to Add section click add photo camera will load , make sure size is limitred to 2 mega pixel, make sure camera is set to add geotag, when you can see satellite engage position take pic and it will automatically upload to the correct position on My Map as a thumbnail. The issue for me is the cost of data roamimg o'seas so would like the option to take pic with geotag and uploaf via wifi at stops along the way.

I have a month to sort this mess out!!!

ok, first things first.
here's a way to upload your 'route' into google maps WITHOUT incurring a bunch of data charges as i only use a gps logger and then my tracks.

use GeoLogger to update your GPS position during your trip
import these settings into MY TRACKS
the only way i know how to import them into MY TRACKS
is to FileManager. Open FileManager and goto
SDCARD
GPSLogger
single tap on the .gpx file you want
a list of programs comes up
choose MY TRACKS
your gpx file is now being imported to MY TRACKS
once its in, hit MENU, then TRACKS
long tap on the TRACK you want from the list that comes up
then choose SEND TO GOOGLE and the rest should be easy for you

here are the app urls

now for the photo issue...

i tried uploading some photos today and the thumbnails show up on MY MAPS.
i'm using a DESIRE and it automatically downsizes my images to a very small size :( 640x480 OR 640x384.
i would like to get bigger pictures uploaded.
another thing is that i can't just add a photo from the phone, i MUST take a picture with the camera. its only after i do that can i then choose a photo from the phone.

and i just noticed that the photos are placed on the map in the right geo location :) so i guess the only problem is to get larger photos uploaded.

and how do i check if the XIF of GEO info is uploaded into PICASA?

i'm really happy we can help each other solve these problems :)

Thanks liqid monkey

the first part is a bit technical for me...
i have drawn my route in my maps, i have added waypoints and i can use "my maps Editor" which works in the following way
1) open MME, chose map, then click ADD, then click add photo
2) this automatically opens camera in X10 , make sure satellite symbol is showing, take picture.
3) this automatically uploads pic to correct position in MM

BUT.....how do you upload picture via MME some time later i.e. when with WIFI and not data roaming

Another point is that when i upload pics to Flickr the location does not match the location info in EXIF lat is ok but long is different. Its driving me mad that googel can't integrate things better
