Announcing the full roll-out of the updated Google Maps for desktop

Hello Google Maps Community,

In 2013, we previewed a new version of desktop Maps and since then, we’ve been continually improving the product to provide a richer, more engaging, and more helpful mapping experience. We will soon be rolling out the updated version of Google Maps to everyone. After the update, you'll no longer be able to use the older, classic Google Maps.

The new Lite mode

As part of the update, we’ve built a completely new Lite mode to provide a faster, streamlined version of Maps. You can try out the new version of Lite mode by visiting https://www.google.com/maps/?force=lite. Maps may automatically update to Lite mode if you are using an older browser (such as Internet Explorer 8 or 9).

For more information about the full roll-out of the update, please visit this Help Center article.

Google Maps will continue to improve over time, and we appreciate any feedback you may have. You can send our developers your thoughts through the Feedback tool, or share them here on this thread.

Thank you,

The Google Maps Team

Hi Abby

Why does Google Maps team keep ignoring our feedback on this awful relaunch?

We still have that unwanted massive search box on the maps!
We are still unable to generate links to specific layers in our My maps
We are still fighting against unwanted Autozoom every time that we try to drag the map across the screen

All of these are key issues raised by numerous people, and yet you've ignored all of them !

How about leaving well enough alone? The new Google Maps is TERRIBLE. There's a reason I still use the 'classic' version - because THE NEW VERSION SUCKS!

I know this is falling on deaf ears but please don't do it!  Don't retire the old Google Maps, it's all that we have that we can use because the new Google Maps are an awful mess and almost unusable.  I don't care if it looks cute on a tablet, we all want the functionality of the old Google Maps/My Maps back and if you retire what's left of the usable Google Maps (Classic Maps) we are all going to look elsewhere because the New Google Maps is absolutely worthless, and it's still an absolute head-scratcher how anybody actually thought this would be an improvement.

Does the subject of lost functionality and usability of the new Google Maps ever come up in the meetings about the "upgrade', or maybe it's a case of being afraid to tell the project leader that their shiny new "upgrade" just doesn't work?

Just don't do it, please please give us back usable Google Maps.  The new Google Maps is an "upgrade" nobody wants!!!

The new version is horrible. It is really horrible news to learn you are taking away the classic maps version, which is so much easier and simpler to use. Not to mention the new version is blurry, hard to read, slow, buggy, etc.

Please if you are going to eliminate the old version.... Which I greatly oppose at least take note on my feedback below, the highlighted area being the most important for me and surely many other people.....:

***Where are the Google Map Labs??

Such as:
***Measuring Tool?

***Lat-Long Marker??

*****On the 'Classic' Google Maps... you had the option on the right hand side of the Map, to:

See, Check and UnCheck your previous searches...
...When you checked it... the Icon would appear on those locations...

....This is extremely useful when you are doing a research and want to visually compare the different distances of previous searches of towns and cities... on the go without having to create a special map for it...

***Where is the "Traffic data estimate based on  past conditions"??

Would it be possible to add these?  In creating the new GMaps... all of this functionality was gone...  It may have more pictures and may look 'nicer' but it isn't very useful....

Sincerely,
LG

I understand that the new improved Google Maps is a new sophisticated tool to increase local ad space. And I understand why you need to do that. And it's probably a great idea for a tourist, but I nevertheless agree with pretty much everyone here that the new Google Maps is very user unfriendly. Dear Google, it IS possible to have too much of a good thing. My suggestion, which I know will not be seen by anyone that counts, is to go ahead and put all your new whiz-bang features in the new Google Maps, but make it possible to turn them off. Default all these new features to off and let us turn them on when we want them, otherwise keep them out of our face as it really destroys the usefulness of the map as a map. I use Google Maps several times a day for the sole purpose of locating an address and seeing how Google want's me to get there. Pretty much everything else you offer in the new maps is an unwanted distraction and functionally in the way. Get me from point A to point B efficiently with a minimum of distractions is all I'm asking for. The rest is annoying decoration.

As I would like to be able to see my Search History Icons on the Map (of that session), such as I was able to do it on the classic Google Maps....

[This is in regards to the "See, Check and UnCheck your previous searches" on the comment above]

***In regards to the feature...: ***Where is the "Traffic data estimate based on  past conditions"??  mentioned above I see that it was added!!!

Hello LG,

***Where are the Google Map Labs??
Maps Labs has been discontinued in the new Maps and some features are no longer available.
Please, send feedback directly to the developers, as explained in this help center article, to let them know what tools would you like to see implemented in new Maps
https://support.google.com/maps/answer/3094045?hl=en&ref_topic=3093612
I wish Google would implement the Maps Labs' Drag 'n' Zoom because the current zoom capabilities of new Maps are inadequate to say the least.,

***Measuring Tool?
This help article explains how to use the Distance and Area Measurement Tool in new Maps.
https://support.google.com/maps/answer/1628031

***Lat-Long Marker??
This help article explains how to get coordinates on new Maps using the "What's here?" feature.
https://support.google.com/maps/answer/18539
You can also get the coordinates of a point in the map by clicking, most time two clicks, the map.

*****On the 'Classic' Google Maps... you had the option on the right hand side of the Map, to:
This feature is gone from new Maps, there is a "search nearby" feature, but it is a much dumb down version of the functionality we had in classic Maps.
This help article explains how to do a "search nearby" search
https://support.google.com/maps/answer/4610185
Please, send feedback to the developers requesting the implementation of this feature.
In the meantime, use Mapquest, which has a better multiple search display feature that Google maps ever had, even classic Maps.

***Where is the "Traffic data estimate based on  past conditions"??
There is a way to see traffic conditions based on historical traffic data.
Please, take a look at the animation in this help article to find it.

I will never understand why Google ask us for our feedback and do absolutely nothing with it.

I mean, where is the Street View icon on the actual directions themselves? Why do I have to drag the pacman to the actual place? And why do I have to close the previous directions before searching for others? Why not have a search bar above the actual directions I've searched for so I can change my directions as and when I wish to?

Reminds me of that time everyone complained about the FORCED usage of the odious Google+ on YouTube comments, Google said our feedback is valued, yet took none of the feedback on board.

I look forward to our feedback not being counted.

I hate the google map now.  The way it navigates on screen is beyond frustrating.  I just want to scroll around the map without it zooming in or out without me asking it too.
It stinks.

They've killed that one as well now.  This just seems so petty and small-minded.
