Manage data sharing settings in Google Maps built into your car

Important: This article is only for Google Maps built into your car. Feature availability or functionality may depend on your car manufacturer or region and data plan.

Share your vehicle data, select how offline maps are downloaded, and understand what data Maps shares with Google in the privacy centre.

Tip: This feature isn't available in all languages and countries/regions. Learn how to use Assistant on other platforms.

Find the privacy centre

1. On your car's home screen, open the Google Maps app .
2. At the bottom, tap Settings 
3. Tap Privacy centre.

Share vehicle data with Google

Share trip & sensor data

As you drive, Google collects data, such as:

• GPS location
• Navigation details, including the route that you took
• Descriptions of the road, like road sign info or lane markings
• Vehicle sensor status, like when your windscreen wipers are turned on
• Sensor data from all your devices, like the barometer readings from your phone and wheel speed if your phone is connected to a compatible vehicle

Google uses your data by itself or combined with others to make Maps better. When you share this data, Google uses it to update the map and make information, including real-time traffic conditions, visible to others.

How Google protects trip & sensor data

• Updates to the map based on trip & sensor data aren’t associated with your Google Account or vehicle.
• Trip & sensor data is also not associated with your Google Account, but with a securely generated identifier that resets on a regular basis. That means Google can’t look up this data based on your Google Account.
• Other data collected as you explore the world, such as when you use the Google Assistant, may be associated with your Google Account. You can control Web & App Activity by visiting myactivity.google.com.
• To change location permission for Google Maps in the car, go to Settings Apps and notifications App permissions Location Maps.
• Google only collects the trip & sensor data needed to provide the best Maps experience for everyone – after processing, it’s deleted.

Share EV data

Your electric vehicle can share data with Google, such as:

• Battery level, capacity and charging speed in different conditions 
• Air conditioning status 
• Engine and braking efficiency 
• Specs, such as your vehicle’s weight

If you share this data, it will be saved on Google servers. The data is used to give you:

• Car range 
• Battery estimates based on your destination 
• Recommended min charging times
• Alerts, such as when your next stop is out of reach or when you’ll arrive at your next stop with low battery
• Improved battery management and vehicle efficiency

Choose your offline maps options

Offline maps support your vehicle’s safety-related driver assistance features and help you use Maps without an internet connection.

If you choose to auto-download offline maps:

• Maps will auto-download offline maps for you and keep them up to date
• Your vehicle may periodically contact Google servers to provide info, such as your vehicle’s location, Location History and offline maps that you’ve already downloaded
• You can still select your own offline maps to download 
• Turning this off won’t delete offline maps that have already been downloaded
• To delete offline maps, go to Settings   Offline maps

If you choose to manually download offline maps:

• You select the offline maps that you want to download and manually update them yourself. To begin, go to Settings   Offline maps
• If you don’t download or update the offline map of the area that you’re driving in, some of your vehicle’s safety features may not work
