Community guidelines

Google Maps contains a variety of features that enable you to create and share information about your world. Whether you're creating a map of your favorite hiking trails in My Maps, submitting a review of a restaurant, or moving the location of a local business to a more accurate position on the map, you are helping other members of the Google Maps community discover that world. Each of these new features on Google Maps involves a certain level of trust that the information you share is appropriate.

When material within the service - such as a map, review, or user edit - is flagged as inappropriate, we review it to determine whether it violates our Terms of Service. If we remove the material you can assume that we removed it deliberately. If you find other materials on Google Maps with the same violations, please flag them so we can review them too. Additionally, certain community features of Google Maps are moderated, so your contribution may not be reflected in the service if it violates the Terms of Service or guidelines.

Here is a summary of some common-sense rules that will help you enjoy the community features of Google Maps:

  • Users benefit when the information in Google Maps is current and local; don't undermine other users' experience by attempting to move a location or update information inaccurately.
  • Everyone hates spam. Do not create misleading entries for businesses or other points of interest in the service.
  • Do not attempt to add information or edit existing information in the service to describe or promote illegal activities.
  • We have zero tolerance for use of the service for predatory behavior, stalking, threats, harassment, or revealing the personal information of others. Anyone caught doing these things may be permanently banned from Google Maps.
  • Respect copyright. Only use or submit information that you created yourself or that you have obtained the rights to use.
Please take these rules seriously - violations of the Terms of Service may result in a warning notification or may result in termination of your account and deletion of your submitted content.
