Plan your commute or trip

Before your start your drive or transit trip to home, work or other places, plan your trip and see useful info. This way, you can know when to leave, what traffic to expect, which route to take, and if there are any disruptions along the way.

Find place, traffic, & transit info

You can use Google Maps to quickly get place, traffic, and transit information all in one spot.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Google Maps.
  2. At the bottom, tap Commute CommuteGet traffic information, see estimated travel times, and navigate to home or work. You can also get recommended or alternate routes to and from your home and work addresses. 
  3. To switch between home and work info, tap "To home" or "To work" at the top of the screen and select the option you want from the drop-down list. 

Tip: To see the map, tap anywhere on the map or drag the tabs back down.

Set up or change your home and work addresses

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Google Maps.
  2. Tap Menu Menu and then Your places

To edit an existing saved place: Tap More More and then Edit [name of saved place]. You can also change the icon or remove the saved place.

Change the way you commute

You can see different routes and suggestions for your commute by changing the mode of transportation.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Google Maps.
  2. At the bottom, tap Commute Commute.
  3. Tap More More Settings and then Commute settings and then How you commute and then Choose an option. 

Hide your regular routes

If your Location History is turned on, sometimes you'll see directions for your regular routes: the usual paths you take. If you don't want this info shown, you can hide your regular routes.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Google Maps.
  2. Tap Menu Menu and then Settings and then Personal content.
  3. Turn off Regular routes.

See traffic now & later

To reach your destination as quickly as possible, check typical traffic before you drive. You can avoid the busiest times of day.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Google Maps.
  2. Search for a destination, or tap a place on the map.
  3. At the bottom, tap Directions.
  4. At the top, tap Driving Driving.
  5. Tap the white bar at the bottom of the screen. You’ll see:
    • The current traffic on your route
    • Typical traffic by the hour and any slowdowns on the way

Tell us about your commute

To make directions and trip info more accurate and reliable, tell Google Maps about your commute. You can give details about usual arrival times, departure times, and travel days.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app Google Maps.
  2. At the bottom, tap Commute Commute.
  3. Tap Set up commute updates. If you don’t see this option, tap Menu Menu and then Settings and then Commute settings.
  4. Follow the instructions.

After setting up your commute, you’ll receive notifications about traffic, delays or disruptions, and travel times along your route.
