Download areas and navigate offline
If you're going where the Internet is slow, mobile data is expensive, or you can't get online, you can save an area from Google Maps to your phone or tablet and use it when you're offline.
Note: Downloading offline maps isn't available in some regions because of contractual limitations, language support, address formats, or other reasons.
Download a map to use offline
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app
.
- Make sure you're connected to the Internet and signed in to Google Maps.
- Search for a place, like
San Francisco
. - At the bottom, tap the name or address of the place
tap More
.
- Select Download offline map
Download.
Use offline maps
After you download a map, use the Google Maps app just like you normally would. If your Internet connection is slow or absent, Google Maps will use your offline maps to give you directions.
Note: You can get driving directions offline, but not transit, bicycling, or walking directions. In your driving directions, you won't have traffic info, alternate routes, or lane guidance.
Manage offline maps
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app

- In the top left, tap Menu
Offline maps.
You can select your own map to download, or view maps you've already downloaded.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app

- In the top left, tap Menu
Offline maps.
- Tap the map you want to delete.
- Tap Delete.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app
.
- In the top left, tap Menu
Offline maps.
- Select an area.
- In the top right, tap Edit
.
- Update the area name and tap Save.
Offline maps that you downloaded on your phone or tablet need to be updated before they expire. When your offline maps expire in 15 days or less, Google Maps will try to update the map automatically when you're connected to Wi-Fi.
If your offline maps aren’t automatically updated, you can update them by following the steps below.
From the notification
- In the "Update offline maps" notification, tap Update Now.
- Tap the expired or expiring map on the list.
- Tap Update.
- The offline map will update.
From anywhere else
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app
.
- In the top left, tap the Menu
Offline maps.
- Tap the expired or expiring map on the list.
- Tap Update.
- The offline map will update.
