Google My Maps has been upgraded

If you created custom maps in the past, you now have a new, more powerful Google My Maps.

Just like with classic My Maps, you can save places, driving directions, add photos and videos, and more. But it also has new features:

  • Share your map like you do a Google Doc.
  • Use different colors to make parts of your map stand out.
  • Label your features directly on the map.
  • Import locations from a spreadsheet.
  • Organize your places with layers.

What does this mean for me?

  • You're be able to access, edit, view, and share your existing maps with the new My Maps.
  • You won’t be able to access, create, or edit your My Maps from the classic Google Maps anymore.
  • You can access your maps in the Google My Maps for Android app. However, you won’t be able to see them in the Google Maps for Android app or in the Google Earth iOS app.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take my data out of My Maps?

You can export your map as a KML file, which is a file format used to display geographic data. If you’ve upgraded your maps, you can choose to export either the pre-upgraded, classic My Maps version or the upgraded, new My Maps version.

You will only be able to download your original, pre-upgraded map data as a KML file until June 1, 2015.

Download your files

  1. Open the new My Maps.
  2. To pick the map with the data you want to export, click Open a map.
  3. Click the folder icon folder
  4. Download your files:
    • To export the current map, click Export to KML.
    • Or to download the pre-upgrade, classic My Maps version, click Download classic My Maps data.
  5. Choose which layers you’d like to export then click Submit.

With the new My Maps, you can both export and import KML files.

My map looks different. What happened?

Some of your features may have been adjusted to fit in My Maps.

  • Directions routes:
    • Some walking or biking direction routes may have too many points and go over the My Maps limit. These routes were converted to a driving route.
  • HTML and rich text:
    • Visible text from My Map information windows will be shown as plain text. Rich Text isn’t available in My Maps.
    • My Maps will display links, tables, and line breaks from upgraded My Maps.
    • Other HTML markups will not be shown.
  • Images and videos:
    • My Maps will show images and embedded YouTube videos from upgraded My Maps.
    • Non-YouTube videos from upgraded My Maps will display as a clickable links in My Maps.

If your map has more than 1,000 places, lines, or shapes saved:

  • If your map has 1,000 features or less, all features were upgraded.
  • If your map has between 1,000 and 10,000 features:
    • If you use the free version of My Maps, all your map features were upgraded. You can edit and remove these features, but you won’t be able to add new features. If you remove a feature, it can’t be brought back using the undo button in the new My Maps.
    • If you were a My Maps Pro user before December 3, 2014 (when Pro features were added to the free version of My Maps), all the map features were upgraded. All features are editable and removable, and you can add new features up to 10,000 total.
  • If your My Map has more than 10,000 features:
    • If you use the free version of My Maps, the first 10,000 features from your map were upgraded. Any remaining features beyond 10,000 were not be included in your map. The upgraded features are editable and removable, but you can’t add new features to your map. If you remove a feature, it can’t be brought back using the undo button in My Maps.
    • If you were a My Maps Pro user before December 3, 2014 (when Pro features were added to the free version of My Maps), the upgraded features are editable and removable, and you can add new features up to 10,000 total.

There are also some limits to the number of directions routes:

  • The new My Maps upgraded your first 9 saved routes as separate, individual directions layers.
  • Other saved routes after the first 9 were upgraded but grouped together in your map’s first layer with other features. You can't add new directions layers once you’ve reached the limit.
  • To compare the upgraded version to the classic My Maps version, you can always download the original classic My Maps data.

What about the people who I’ve added to collaborate on a map? Do I need to reshare the map?

The people who you allowed to view the map are the same. However, if you previously allowed others to edit your map, you may need to re-share the map with them. If you’re the map owner, you can change the sharing settings in the new My Maps:

  1. Open the new Google My Maps.
  2. Click Open a map.
  3. Choose the map you’d like to share.
  4. Click the green Share button.
  5. Type the email addresses of the people you want to share with in the text box below "Add people." You can add a single person, a mailing list, or choose from your contacts.
  6. Choose the access level from the drop-down menu next to each collaborator: "Can view," or "Can edit."
  7. Click Share & save.
What about maps embedded on my website?

Maps embedded on your website were upgraded and display the new version. You do not need to make any additional changes for this to happen.

What happened to My Maps I've saved to My Places as bookmarks?

You could bookmark custom maps created by other users in the Classic My Maps. These are marked by the "Bookmarked" label next to the map title.

Your bookmarked maps were not migrated to the new My Maps when you upgraded. However, you can bookmark them in your browser to access them in the future. Bookmark My Maps in Chrome:

  1. Open the new Google My Maps.
  2. Click Open a map.
  3. Choose the map you’d like to bookmark.
  4. Use keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+D (Mac: ⌘+D), or click the star button in the top right corner.

You can also bookmark a public map by opening the map from a URL:

  1. Open the map from a URL, for example “http://maps.google.com/maps/1234.”
  2. Click Bookmarks in the Chrome menu at the top of your screen.
  3. Click Bookmark this page.
How is the privacy of my maps affected?

Any maps that were private on the classic My Maps stay private on the new My Maps. If you create a map in the new My Maps, it's private by default.

Public classic My Maps default to public maps in the new My Maps. If you decide to change these sharing settings, you may experience issues if they were embedded or bookmarked by others.
