See your current location

To search for places around you and get directions more quickly, center the map on your current location. To see where you are on the map, look for the blue dot .

Center the map on your location

To center the map on your location, follow the steps below.

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. In the bottom right, click Your location . This will center the map on the blue dot.

How Maps gets location info

Maps uses different sources to try to get an accurate read on your location. This info might come from:

  • Your computer's web browser location info
  • Your phone's location, if you have location on for your phone

What the location icon colors mean

Gray icon

A gray icon means that Google Maps doesn’t have your location.

Tip: To tell Maps where you are, click or tap the gray icon. Make sure that you have location turned on.

Gray and black icon

An icon with a gray center and black ring means that Google Maps might have accessed your location recently. To re-center the map, click or tap the icon again.

Black icon

An all-black icon means that Google Maps is showing a map area that isn’t near your location because you might have moved the map or searched somewhere else. To re-center the map, click or tap the icon again.

Blue icon

A blue icon means the map is centered on your location.
