Find and improve your location’s accuracy

Sometimes Google Maps might have trouble finding where you are located. If the GPS location of your blue dot on the map is inaccurate or the blue dot is not showing up, here are some things you can do to help fix the problem.

Tip: This will also improve your search results and make them more relevant to you.

See your current location on the map

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. In the bottom right, click My location My location. The blue dot shows where you are.

Give Maps location permission in your browser

To center the map where you are, you'll need to give Maps permission to see your location.

Chrome
  1. Open Chrome and go to Google Maps.
  2. In the bottom right, click My location My location.
  3. If you see a message that says "Google Maps does not have permission to use your location," follow the steps below.
  4. In the top right, click More More.
  5. Click Settings and then At the bottom, click Advanced.
  6. In the "Privacy and security" section, click Content settings.
  7. Click "Location" and then make sure that Ask before accessing (recommended) is turned on.
  8. Click Back Back.
  9. Try steps 1 and 2 again.
Firefox
  1. Open Firefox and go to Google Maps.
  2. In the bottom right, click My location My location.
  3. When asked to share your location, choose Allow location access.
Safari
  1. Open Safari and go to Google Maps.
  2. In the bottom right, click My location My location.
  3. When asked to share your location, choose Allow.

You might be asked to change your location settings on your computer before you can turn them on for Safari. To do this:

  1. Open System Preferences and then Security & Privacy Preferences and then Privacy and then Location Services.
  2. To allow for changes, click the lock in the bottom left.
  3. Check "Enable Location Services."
Internet Explorer
  1. Open Internet Explorer and go to Google Maps.
  2. In the bottom right, click My location My location.
  3. If you’re asked to share your location, click Allow once or Options for this site and then Always allow.
  4. If you see a message that "Google maps does not have permission to use your location," go to your browser’s toolbar and click Tools Settings and then Internet Options and then Privacy and then under "Location," click Clear Sites.

More ways to improve location accuracy

If you get an error like "Your location cannot be determined" or your location is still wrong, here are some things you can try:

  • Refresh your browser (such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari).
  • Check to make sure you have a strong Internet connection.
  • Double-check your browser’s permission settings using the instructions above.
  • Restart your computer.
