Find and improve your location’s accuracy

Sometimes Google Maps might have trouble finding where you are located. If the location of your blue dot on the map is inaccurate or isn't showing up, here are some things you can do to help fix the problem.

See your current location on the map

To see where you are right now on the map, follow the steps below.

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. In the bottom right, click Your location . The blue dot shows where you are.

Give Maps location permission in your browser

To center the map where you are, you'll need to give Maps permission to see your location.

Chrome
  1. Open Chrome and go to Google Maps.
  2. In the bottom right, click Your location .
  3. If you see a message that says "Google Maps does not have permission to use your location," follow the steps below.
  4. In the top right, click More More.
  5. Click Settings and then Show advanced settings.
  6. In the "Privacy" section, click Content settings.
  7. In the dialog that appears, scroll down to the "Location" section. Select one of these permissions:
    • Allow all sites to track your physical location: Select this option to let all sites automatically see your location.
    • Ask when a site tries to track your physical location: Select this option if you want Google Chrome to alert you whenever a site wants to see your location.
    • Do not allow any site to track your physical location: Select this option if don't want any sites to see your location.
  8. Click Done.
Firefox
  1. Open Firefox and go to Google Maps.
  2. In the bottom right, click Your location .
  3. When asked to share your location, choose Always share location.
Safari
  1. Open Safari and go to Google Maps.
  2. In the bottom right, click Your location .
  3. When asked to share your location, choose Allow.

You might be asked to change your location settings on your computer before you can turn them on for Safari. To do this:

  1. Open System Preferences and then Security & Privacy Preferences and then Privacy and then Location Services.
  2. To allow for changes, click the lock in the bottom left.
  3. Check "Enable Location Services."
Internet Explorer
  1. Open Internet Explorer and go to Google Maps.
  2. In the bottom right, click Your location .
  3. If you’re asked to share your location, click Allow once or Options for this site and then Always allow.
  4. If you see a message that "Google maps does not have permission to use your location," go to your browser’s toolbar and click Settings and then Privacy and then under "Location," click Clear Sites.

More ways to improve location accuracy

If you get an error like "Your location cannot be determined" or your location is still wrong, here are some things you can try:

  • Refresh your browser (such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari).
  • Check to make sure you have a strong Internet connection.
  • Double-check your browser’s permission settings using the instructions above.
  • Restart your computer.
