How to use Google Maps

Use Google Maps on your computer, phone, or tablet to search, explore, and find your way around the world. On your computer, open Google Maps. On your phone or tablet, use the Google Maps appGoogle Maps.

Note: On a phone or tablet, you can get travel times and directions to places you might go next, like your home, job, or calendar appointments. At the bottom of your map, tap Commute Commute. Then scroll through the options that appear.

There are lots of ways to use Google Maps on your computer, phone, or tablet. Here are some things you can do.

See search results

Look for a place or type of places, see recent searches, or get directions. You'll see search results as red mini-pins and red dots, where mini-pins show the top results. To see more information, get directions, or see inside a business, click or tap any result.

Explore the map

On your computer, click anywhere on the map to get details about a place. On your phone or tablet, touch and hold anywhere on the map to get details about a place.

Measure distances between points

You can measure distances between two points.

Report a data problem

Help to make Google Maps better by reporting problems with the map, like incorrect business details, wrong road names, or other errors.

See traffic, transit, biking, and terrain info

You can see more information about travel routes, traffic, or the landscape.

  • On your iPhone or iPad, at the top, tap Layers Layers and then pick an option.
  • On other mobile devices or your computer, click or tap Menu Menu. Then select an option from the list. 
See the world in 3D

To see 3D Earth view on your computer, go to the bottom left and click the square.

See Street View

If Street View images are available, you'll see a Street View thumbnail when you choose a place on the map.

Move the map

To see more details on the map, zoom in or out. On your mobile device, you can use gestures like rotate, tilt, and zoom to quickly move through the Google Maps app.

See your current location

To search for places around you and get directions more quickly, center the map on your current location.
