Help Google Maps find my location

If you see the message "Couldn’t determine your precise location," you're not in the Google Maps app. You’re using Google Maps through your device’s internet browser, like Chrome or Safari. You’ll see this message because:

  • Your mobile internet browser doesn't have permission to see your location.
  • Your location is turned off on your phone or tablet.

Switch to the Google Maps app

To use features like traffic alerts and turn-by-turn navigation, and to help Maps find your location:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, download the latest version of the app.
  2. Open the Google Maps app Google Maps.
  3. If you see a message asking you about location access, tap OK or Allow. If you don't see that message, tap the Settings button to turn on location services.

Open links in the Google Maps app

If you see information like directions or location information in your browser, you can open them in the Google Maps app.

If the links don’t open in the app:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, clear your cache and cookies by opening the Settings app and then Safari and then Clear History and Website Data.
  2. Open Google Maps in your mobile browser.
  3. Search for a location and then tap on the name of the location.
  4. Tap on the address of the location and then tap Directions Directions .
  5. If you see a message to get navigation using the Google Maps app, tap Use the app.

Optional: Keep using Google Maps in your browser
